The "DC Cough"

I was at my allergist's office this week (sinus infection, yipee!) and she hesitantly asked if I had been coughing. I said no.

She looked so relieved and explained that there is a weird "bug" going around that is causing 2-3 months of coughing and feeling ill with folks in DC and docs are trying to strategize on what is causing it.

So - the shorter version =

Please wash your hands.

Re: The "DC Cough"

  • I heard about this. two coworkers of mine have been sick for like 5 weeks they said. antibacterial sanitizers are in full effect!

  • Um yes, one of my coworkers caught it from his children and it is seriously nasty.  I'm sure it is viral because it spreads like crazy- I clorox wipe down my desk every day and sanitize as frequently as possible just to try to keep myself healthy.

  • I've been coughing for months.. years, really.  I think I really need to see an allergist, because my post-nasal drip is awful.

(that was not really related to the OP, was it?)

  • On the same note - do you recommend your allergist?  Is she in D.C.?
  • My 1st grade students are all hacking their heads off.  It's horrible.  I had 6 out sick today with whatever's going around. My DD has had a bad cough all week and now strep.  Fun times.  Hand sanitizer has become my best friend.

  • Huh, I wonder if that's what I've had. I got sick 6 weeks ago, and still have the cough. It's definitely gotten much better than it was, but the dregs of it are holding on strong. And, for the record, I wash my hands religiously.
  • I have it. It totally sucks and nothing is helping.

  • FWIW, my coworker's doctor told him that it wasn't viral or bacterial, but rather lots of people having an active allergic reaction to leaf mold.  According to her leaf mold doesn't usually get into the air, but because of the alternating rain and unseasonable warmth when all the leaves were on the ground in late Nov. it's been a problem this year.
  • Ew, I hadn't heard about this.  It could definitely explain why I've been all sniffly and cough-y for the last few weeks though.  Sad

  • Wow I wonder if this is what DH is dealing with.  He's lost his voice and had a nasty cough combined with feeling generally crappy 3 separate times in the past 8 weeks or so.  He first got it, was out of commission for 2 weeks, was better and then 2 weeks later it came back.  Repeat once more.

  • We all have it (me, DH, DD).  I have noticed that it's getting "better" but none of us are 100%.  I went to my PCP because I'm 25 weeks pregnant and I was concerned it was bacterial.  They told me it was an allergen/irritant and to take zyrtec or claritin, which I can't take because I'm pregnant.  So I've just been waiting for it to resolve itself.  We've had it for a month so it's very reassuring we only have 2 more months to go!!  Ugh.  Jenn

  • My 3 month old has been coughing for 2+ weeks now.  I really hope this doesn't last for a couple of months!

  • Me - I've been coughing since late October.  I had a sinus infection, and those symptoms were resolved with antibiotics, but the cough won't go away.  Phlegmy and nasty.

I actually go to Allergy Care Centers - they have a robust list of docs, locations, etc. http://myallergycare.com/

I love how quickly I can get in and how responsive they are. They also have NIH funding with some of the docs so they are very up-to-date and able to educate and troubleshoot your care plan to adapt for maximum adherence and outcomes.

  • YES!! I know of 5 people in the past month who have lost their voice and gotten a persistent cough. I lost my voice in mid-November and it turned into a cough that still has not gone away. I finally went to the dr today. She wasn't very helpful in determining what it was, but gave me a z-pack and some sort of cough pill that ended up being sold out at the pharmacy. My abdominal muscles hurt from coughing so much. I am done being sick.

  • I've had a cough since the first Sat of October. So does that mean it's almost over for me?! It's definitely draining and I'm so tired of coughing!!
