Do you tip anyone at the holidays?
We don't, and I wonder if I'm missing something, since "how much to tip" is a hot topic on every talk show, etc. these days.
I don't go to the hairdresser enough to tip him (I go maybe 2x year). We don't have a newspaper delivery person. Our mailman sucks (we have had a lot of mail delivery issues since we moved in) plus we never see him.
Is there someone else in my life I should be tipping?
Re: Do you tip anyone at the holidays?
We do, but not the hairdresser, mailman or newspaper person, lol. In the City it was always our Super and the doormen. Now, it's our housekeeper and the daycare staff.
6 people at daycare, plus I am bringing bagels for breakfast for everyone tomorrow. Then just one housekeeper who is coming today so I just left a card containing money next to her payment for today.
I tipped our hair stylist extra since we both had appointments in the last few weeks.
I would like to tip our mail man and trash people but I've yet to figure out a way to make this happen. How does this mail man know which envelope is his? Do I tape a tip on the trash can? What if they throw it away?
Just an FYI
My dad is a mailman. They are not suppose to accept cash gifts since they are federal employees. I know most do anyways
. For the most part he recieves gifts like homemade cookies and bread, boxes of candy, and honestly his favorite gift is on warm days in the summer when someone brings him out a cold pop and on cold days in the summer a cup of hot coffee. People just leave it in their mailboxes with a note that says To: Mailman.
I'm not sure on the trashman one though!
I gave my hairdresser a 20 tip for christmas (40 dollar hair cut, so much but I love her and she did my hair great for our company christmas party).
I have no clue what to get day care teachers. May just do a GC to panera / starbucks / dunkins. I know they don't get paid much, but she has only been in this room for 2-3 weeks, so have not built up a relationship with them yet. But she has been in 2 other rooms since christmas, so should I get them GC too?

Thanks for the info! I wish I was home when he delivered b/c the warm drink is a really good idea. I feel so bad for those guys in the cold weather.
Do they know to check envelopes for their own gifts? I figured he got a lot of homemade goods so I'd like to leave a giftcard or something if I could.
We don't. I don't have a hairdresser, we don't send out deliveries, we bring our own trash to the dump, so those are all out. I was thinking of doing something for daycare, but even if we did, it would be small. Since we're watching our pennies right now, that isn't happening. Maybe I'm just cheap though.
At the office, we tip the maintenance guy for the building and the regular mailman. We don't do regular deliveries, so we skip that one, and no cleaning service.
I also tip my hairdresser more at my last appointment before the holidays, but that's it.
In the summer, I'll leave a cold water in the mailbox or run it out to the mailman if I'm home.
I will/have tipped the cleaning people, daycare and the newspaper delivery person.
I feel like I should tip the UPS guy because he comes to my house daily, but I'm not going to.
I see my hair dresser Wed and am going to bring her some of my holiday popcorn. It's real easy to make and tasty.
I hate my mailman. He is a jerk.
My coworkers husband is a garbage man. He said to put cash in an envelope, then inside a ziplock baggie and tape it to the inside of the lid. If they manually pick up the trash can they will see it. If your trash truck has the automatic lift, you can flag it by putting red tape or something on the top of the can. They all know to look for both of those. He works in a nice Berkeley neighborhood and his tips range from $20-100. Two drivers per truck so they split it. This morning at 8:30a, they had already received $200 each in tips.
