XP: What are your Standards for Contractors?

I posted this on the decorating and renovating board, then realized this might be a better board to post this on.

We are trying to put our townhouse on the market come January. Right now we are renovating slightly to make our place more appealing. We had painters come in last week to paint all of the walls, ceilings, and trim (including closets). We noticed a couple obvious spots that looked like the painters hadn't spackled (and had spackled but didn't sand down and painted over it). They also forgot to paint one window frame in the kitchen, so they are coming back on Monday to do those touchups.

However, as I am going around the house I am noticing some drip marks and some minor areas that look like they did not sand down the spackle, but instead just painted over. Nothing TOO noticable unless you were actually looking at the painting job if you know what I mean. I am kind of annoyed though because we paid to have painters come in for a reason (because we wanted a better job done than we would have accomplished). Their rates were fair, but we are still paying about $1,800. What is your standard for contractors? Would you have them come in and fix the drips and other minor areas? Or would you just accept that it won't be a perfect job?

TIA!

Re: XP: What are your Standards for Contractors?

  • I would have them come and fix it until it's right. I have had professional painters do the interior and exterior of our home and always work with contractors whose policy is "the job's not done until you are 100% satisfied." In fact, I don't work with people unless they agree that payment isn't due until I am satisfied. Life is too short to deal with crappy contractors.
