Present: donations in your name?
How do you feel about donations made in your name instead of actual presents? Everyone I have left on my list has far too much disposable income / niche tastes. Is the whole donation in your name thing a cop our, or have I just figured out how to finish my Christmas shopping?
DH does this for me every year and I think it's awesome, but I am odd and allergic to more stuff.
Re: Present: donations in your name?
I should've mentioned: I know what organizations they generally support, but not who they've donated to before.
If I really had tons of money and could buy what I wanted when I wanted, I'd have no problem w/ someone doing this for me.
But as I'm poor and there is stuff I need, I want presents.

Haha, this.
If someone gave a gift in my name to a charity, I would be happy with it.
However, if they did the same thing with every other relative, I would think they were copping out and not trying too hard.
If you've reached the point where you can't think of something special and personal, then maybe you should stop the gift giving tradition.
I'd be ok with it if it were a charity I would support. If someone made a donation in my name to a charity they supported but I did not agree with... there would be words.
That said, if you know what these people would typically donate to then go for it! As long as you're putting the thought in to coming up with something that matters to them, then I don't see the harm in it.
At this stage (middle aged and double income), I'd be fine w it.
That said, the one time I did it was when we were so clearly C Listed for an OOT wedding, that it was wretchedly gift seeking and I thought it was poetic.
*rubs hands together evilly and plots to give Christian Scientist MIL a donation to Doctors Without Borders....
Hahaha, well since I personally agree with Doctors Without Borders then I think this is a fantastic idea. Tell her the people in the internet said she would like it.
I personally don't like to give those types of gifts because even seemingly non-controversial organizations have people who wouldn't want to actually support them financially (even if they support the general mission of the organization).
I think if you know that a person would support a specific organization, it's okay, but just knowing that they support a certain cause isn't enough IMO.
Love it!
Love it!
I agree .
Maybe you can do one of those monthly club things? Wine, BBQ Sauce , Plant of the month ( yes they have this
) , pickle, cheese, tie and a million more . There all sorts of different price ranges.
I donate in my siblings' names to Heifer International every year. No one's ever taken offense that I'm aware of, and for the most part, anything they want they have. Anything they need they have. Anything they don't already have likely falls into the don't want it/don't need it category, and I told them years ago that I was doing this from now on.
I picked Heifer because it's a favorite of mine. I suppose it would have been a more "thoughtful" gift if I'd chosen one of their favorite charities instead. This year everyone's getting bees.
I will often give little related token gift so they have something to unwrap under the tree. This year it'll be little jars of locally grown honey.
