baby shower food help, ugh

The board is slow. So help me!

For reasons that I don't really care to get into, I am hosting NINETEEN women for a baby shower the DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS. (mom-to-be promised that only a few people would be able to make it (imagine my horror to find that not to be the case?I only got two "no" RSVPs!), said the day was perfect for her since she was here from Boston visiting her family for the holidays and couldn't fly back here afterward, etc. etc. etc.) It's gotten really out of hand.

I am also going through some pretty significant family health turmoil at the moment and want to keep this as simple as possible?a nice Christmas with my family has suddenly become more important than ever.

Food is as follows. What am I missing? Keep in mind that people aren't usually hungry the day after Christmas!

- Spinach artichoke "purses" (already have, can throw in oven)
- The sundried tomato puffed pastry pinwheels Kastle posted (making tonight and freezing)?open to other easy suggestions
- These time-consuming "taco cups" my mom is insisting on making (beans, cheese, ground turkey, sour cream in Tostitos Scoops)
- Veggies/dip and/or fruit/cheese and/or hummus/pita -- or whatever the soon-to-be grandma can bring
- Hot apple cider in the crockpot
- Ice water

Dessert is an ice cream sundae bar with blondies (another girl is bringing) and brownies (grandma-to-be is bringing) and toppings. I don't give a crap that it's December. :) The mom-to-be is known for her ice cream obsession and also, I decided it was best for my well-being not to bake/decorate a cake/cupcakes on Christmas or to have to pick one up from a bakery the morning after Christmas. I threw her an elaborate bridal shower but my heart just isn't in this one. I feel duped and stressed.

Menu thoughts/opinions? I really need this as simple as can be.

Thanks, also, for the vent.

ETA: the shower is at 2:00 p.m.

Re: baby shower food help, ugh

  • What time is it?  Meaning, will people be expecting a bigger 'meal' or just snacks?  If it's just snacks I think you are fine.  You can always throw in some mixed nuts, or these crackers which everyone in my family always loves, and are super easy to make ahead.

  • one of my favorite shower foods is tea sandwiches. they are super easy to make. my current favorite is:

2 slices rye bread (crust removed)

spread goat cheese on each slice

    layer of watercress

layer of cucumber slices (use a slicer, if you have one, for super thin slices)

cut in triangles for two or width-wise for three sandwiches

2:00 p.m. I'll put it in my original post if I can... thanks!

  • Sounds good to me! I like the idea of having some mixed nuts too, and maybe even some candy.
  • I think you're totally covered, especially if you add veggies or fruit.

You might want to offer an alternative for drinks, though--maybe some sodas or something, in case people don't want cider.

  • 2:00 is kind of a tough time, because some will have eaten lunch and some won't.  To be on the safe side, I would probably suggest adding one more thing - either the sandwiches pp mentioned or if you don't want to do any more work (and I wouldn't, it sounds like you've done plenty!) go to BJ's or Costco and get something frozen or pre-made there (e.g. mini quiches).  If you're not a member, I know a lot of these places offer free trial memberships around the holidays.  Or you can probably find something at your grocery store as well.

  • dude, that's plenty of food.  seriously.  it's 2pm which i feel is very clearly a non-meal time.

although, i agree about having some sodas or something in addition to water & hot cider.

  • All very good suggestions so far, thanks!

I'm so focused on all the weird food aversions of my friend (all beef, pork, soda, eggs - like in quiche... and she has given up all chocolate for the duration of her pregnancy because of trace amounts of caffeine Hmm) that I'm having a hard time with the menu! But she's not the only one eating...

Also, my mom (I'm grateful for her help, really) is driving me batty with all these ideas of hers, including the hot cider (she's convinced it will be snowing). I suppose we can also have coffee/tea if necessary and I'll consider soda (but I don't drink it either -- diet? regular? ahhh!)

Oh, candy will totally be covered. We have ice cream, hot fudge, caramel, pb sauce, marshmallow sauce (her fave), Reese's Pieces, nuts, chocolate chips, M&Ms, whipped cream, sprinkles... and the brownies/blondies. People are still in Christmas detox anyway...

Thanks, ladies! I just need to be "talked down." This is very bad timing on so many levels.

  • It sounds like this is a really hard time for you to be hosting something for your friend, I'm so sorry.

It might help to keep in mind that this is a really exciting time for your friend and I'm sure you hosting this shower for her means a lot.  It may be the only baby shower she ever has and I'm sure that anything/everything you do to make it special will be appreciated by her.

Your menu sounds great, but as a pp mentioned, I would add another drink option or two.  Trader Joe's has some great n/a sparkling drinks - raspberry lemonade, lemonade, pomengranate, etc.  My mom had some at my baby shower and they were a pretty big hit.  As an added bonus, they are relatively inexpensive.

  • I think your food sounds lovely.  In my opinion, the best part about a baby shower is the time with friends, celebrating the new baby, and ooohing and aaahing over the adorable, tiny baby gifts.  In the end, the mom-to-be and her guests will never remember what food and drink you did (or didn't) serve, but she will remember that you cared enough to host for her, and that her 19 friends love her enough to be there to celebrate with her on the day after Christmas.  Don't stress about the menu -- and just try to have fun, even at such a stressful time!

PS -- While a little expensive, shrimp cocktail is super easy and delicious!  You can buy the frozen shrimp, thaw them, and serve with a little cocktail sauce.

  • I'm late to chiming in, but I think you have plenty.  I would even skip the taco cups and sub in a veggie tray since you already have two hot appetizers.  I've been to 3 baby showers at 2pm in the last 3 weeks and all had way to much food.  Everyone eats lunch beforehand and just nibbles.  You have one lucky friend.
  • Oh, one more thing, with 19 women, skip the games or just have 1.  That's just too many to make any game fun (if any ever were) at a shower.
