Can someone please explain

Elf on the Shelf?

I've heard this thing being mentioned at work and now people are talking about what they have their elf do.  The impression I get is that it's some sort of doll you put out in your house to scare your kids in to being good because it's some sort of North Pole recon unit that's going to rat them out to Santa.

Is this considered normal?  If so, I am entirely not prepared to have children.  I need to spend a few more years of dreaming up ways to f with their little minds.

Re: Can someone please explain

  • Explain to me, too. What the heck is an Elf on the Shelf?
  • Ew, I found this..."a new family tradition..."

  • It is a trend taken over by mommy bloggers.  I'm not doing it.  It is creepy.  It seems to be common with the momtographer/mommy blog/Bump obsessed types, but I haven't seen it becoming a thing with most people I know IRL.  Plus I would forget to move the thing everyday.

  • This kind of thing makes me really mad that I can't come up w/ something that is totally silly and pointless but that I can make a mint off of it....

  • You can buy an elf anywhere and do that. What's the big deal?

Another moneymaking goldmine. Gee, why didn't we think of that?

No way.  You have to pay $29.95 for a book and a glorified dog toy.

  • Holy crap! This would make a hella cartoon for me to work on.

I hope MAD Magazine tears this little red sob and his dumb dog friend a new one in an upcoming edition.

  • That elf is creepy. One of FI's and I's friends is doing this and posting pictures on FB practically every day with him in different poses and I had no idea what was going on until I read about it over on another board.

    OMFG.

Thank you, I need one of these now just so I can make it pop up in weird and threatening places on my H.  Although I have a feeling my cat would suffer not an elf to live.

  • When I was a child my parents hid small stuffed "Christmas bears" somewhere different throughout the house every night in December and the bears appeared in our stockings on Christmas. We had to find the bears but couldn't touch them. It was fun and harmless and the bears were not creepy looking, they were just nice cute bears that we got to play with on Christmas.

This elf stuff is taking it to an extreme though. Some people have their "elves" baking cookies and blogging ... wtf?

     OMG. That is all.

  • I have a vintage "pixie" I got as a part of my grandma's estate last year. It's from 1965, and (of course) from Japan. There's a little semi-Engrish tag that says my good fortune will continue as long as my pixie is around.

The best part is that the head on our creepy tree topper is clearly, on closer inspection, a severed pixie head.

Why is Christmas in my house so macabre? :(

  • That elf is way too creepy looking for me.
