Holy Hospital Bills - Ventish!

I have to say I am SO thankful that I have good insurance.  My insurance covered 100% of all my maternity care and would have covered 100% of Andrew's had he not gone to the NICU.  So, we budgeted accordingly.

Unfortunately, a NICU stay is not included in the 100% coverage and it looks like we're going to easily hit our out of pocket maximum and pay AT LEAST between $5,000 and $7,000 for Andrew's NICU care (which looks like it's probably going to be between $50,000 and $100,000!!!)

The bills and insurance statements are still rolling in, but I just had to share this somewhere and Facebook didn't seem like the appropriate audience.  On top of needing a new AC this year, we'll pretty much exhaust all our emergency funds by the end of 2011.  I guess 2012 will be about replenishing our e-fund!!!

I'm just thankful to have very good insurance and a good job, I can't imagine how financially devastating all of these bills would be otherwise!

Re: Holy Hospital Bills - Ventish!

  • Wow! I've wondered lately how much ppl end up spending in hospital bills for baby. Sounds Like you do have pretty good insurance

  • although eli was not in the nicu he was readmitted for 48 hours after being home for 24hours. that meant he also wasn't covered under my great maternity coverage. we hit our maximum out of pocket that year too at 8,000. I was just happy it was in July so the rest of the year dr appt. weren't so bad. Then we got the biggest break ever! we had been putting off paying our bill for a long tim which is something we NEVER do and got a letter that december that if we paid our bill in full we would get 40% OFF the entire bill.

  • No wonder health care in this country is so effed up.  Those numbers are ridiculous.

  • I honestly can not even imagine. That seems ridiculous to me.

  • Augh, this makes me nervous about mine! I never thought about having a c-section at all so we weren't expecting to pay for one.

For what it's worth, the c-section wasn't as bad as I thought -- just the NICU stay.

  • Blah - that just stinks. I know how you feel - all my bills for my hospital visits for my m/c are coming in and it is awful. They aren't as bad as yours, but they still suck.

  • LAURA! I love your siggy pic! So adorable :) Those numbers are ridiculous I agree. Healthcare is just so screwed in this county. Lots of things are. Apparently my company is counting the modified bedrest I'm on out of my 12 weeks of FMLA. So at the time of my due date I will only have 8 weeks left to be at home. Ridiculous!

Thanks!  It's one of my many favorites.  I can't believe your company is doing that to you.  My insurance allowed us to start our disability and then once we had our baby we were allowed to start our 12 week fmla if thats what we chose.

  • I know what you mean, we are extremely thankful for good insurance too.  Tinsley was admitted to the nursery at the hospital I delivered, flew in a helicopter to Denver, spent 10 days in the NICU, 2 days in the PICU, 6 days on the PEDS floor, had 3 surgeries and one cath procedure (4 anesthesia bills total).  We haven't even seen all of her bills yet, but they will most likely be close to $500,000!

My hospital bill for a natural delivery and an epi was $13,000 alone.

So thankful for a happy, healthy baby this Christmas!!
