Box set or separate items - does it matter?

I apologize in advance for this potentially dumb question.

I'm looking at getting someone a set of the Harry Potter movies on DVD. Amazon is selling the complete set (8 movies) for around $50. They are also selling a set of the first 7 movies together for $30, plus the last movie separately for $10. Total cost of buying them separately is $40, so $10 less than buying the set all together. I've read the reviews on amazon's site, and from what I can tell, there aren't any special extras in the 8-DVD set (in fact a lot of reviewers are complaining about that). Would it be odd to give someone a 7-DVD set plus one movie? I don't think he'll really care how they are packaged as long as all of the movies are there.

  • Would it look weird to break up the 7 set and wrap all 8 DVDs individually, so it's less obvious you broke up the set?  If he really wants the movies, so probably wouldn't try to return them, it seems reasonable.  Otherwise, I'd just go ahead and do the 7 + 1 the way you're thinking unless he's really compulsive about matching sets.

  • I wouldn't care, but my H would.  It drives him crazy to have partials like that- he'd just buy the 8 disc collection and take the loss selling the others back to Amazon.  So, I'd consider how the person is about collections before doing the 7+1.

FWIW, I got the Blu Ray set of all 8 as a gift and it came with some pretty cool complete collection special features.

  • I would not care at all.  But, I know one of my brother's would.
  • I would buy separately and re-wrap

  • I would buy this one plus, the $10 last movie.

One things that didn't mean anything to me (but was a big deal to my brother, and sometimes to my husband...) is whether or not the movie is full screen or wide screen.  One of them chops off part of the picture... I think full screen chops the picture, but widescreen has the black bars on either side?  I think you want widescreen, because you can always flip back to full screen with the settings.  I could be wrong.

That's the set I'm looking at! I'm guessing it costs so much less because they're discontinuing it now that the last movie is out.
