Okay, girls. I'm going on vacation for two weeks and I'm a voracious reader. A book a day, we're talking. So I need suggestions for what to load up on the ol' Kindle. What have you read? What's good? I like most everything except sci-fi-ish stuff.
Speaking of the Kindle, God bless not having to tote a dozen books on vacation anymore.
ETA: Why is every freaking books these days called something like "Short Title That Doesn't Explain Anything: Longer Title Wherein Author Tries to Humorously Explain What They Should Have Called the Book in the First Place"?
Re: Bring it on...
Have you read anything by Carol Goodman? I really enjoy her books. They're mysteries with a lot of literary influence/references. My favorites are The Ghost Orchid and The Sonnet Lover, but I've read them all at least twice.
(Here she is on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Carol-Goodman/e/B001H6OMX2)
I read Delirium (Lauren Oliver - here: http://www.amazon.com/Delirium-Special-Lauren-Oliver/dp/0062112430/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1324315272&sr=1-1) for a book club recently and liked it espec. because it's set in Maine. It's a dystopian YA novel, if you are into that kind of thing.
For nonfiction I have really enjoyed Bill Bryson, he's quite funny.
Even better, people who own the book could even lend it to you if you read them that fast.
That being said, here are some books currently in my Kindle Library (doesn't mean I've read, marked them with a *, or finished reading them, marked them with a ^):
^Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog
Plane Insanity: A Flight Attendant's Tales of Sex, Rage, and Queasiness at 30,000 Feet
*The Hunger Games
The Help
*The Girl Who Couldn't Say No: Memoir of a teenage mom
*God Save the Mark
*From the Dead
*Please Stop Laughing at Me - Special eBook Edition
*Hurricanes in Paradise
*Stealing Jake
*Reinventing Leona
*The Things You Find on the Appalachian Trail: A Memoir of Discovery, Endurance and a Lazy Dog
Bossypants
I love Bill Bryson - he might be my favorite author. So we're obviously on some kind of similar wavelength. I'll check out the books you mentioned!
Susie, thanks for the suggestions. I've read a couple of those and enjoyed them...I'll check out the others. I'm also looking into borrowing library books on the Kindle - the selection isn't stellar but it's worth me figuring out.
I loved The Help! Would highly recommend it if you haven't read it already.
I just started The Hunger Games and like it so far. It's a series, so that could keep you busy for a day or two!
Others books I have liked lately are Water for Elephants, anything by Nicholas Sparks or Jodi Picoult, and the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.
I am currently finishing up the Hunger Games series (I am behind on the trend) and normally would never had read books of this genre, but I am hooked
Other recent books I enjoyed: The Paris Wife (Paula McLain), Bossypants, Dry (Augusten Burroughs - I love all of his stuff), Comfort Me With Apples (Ruth Reichl)
for really easy-reading books, I liked Emily Griffen (Love the One You're With, Something Borrowed, etc...silly girly books)...and some of the Chelsea Handler books are pretty funny and quick
and I love Tim Sandlin (Sorrow Floats, Social Blunders, etc.), David Sedaris and Bill Bryson, too
I'm picking up A Clockwork Orange today for a book club I'm in...not sure it will be my thing...we'll see!
Oh yes, Emily Giffin is good - I finally read "Heart of the Matter" and it made me really sad/mad, but was well written. I've enjoyed all of her books so far, here is her first on Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/Something-Borrowed-ebook/dp/B002F081N6
You guys are the best! So much of what you've suggested is stuff I loved, so I'm sure the stuff I haven't read yet will be great! The samples of everything should keep me occupied for at least a bit!
Kristin, I reread Anne every summer - so good! I'd love to see what's on your wishlist.
I'm currently reading "Sippy cups are not for Chardonnay" which I believe sweetpea suggested in a previous thread. Honestly, hilarious I haven't literally LOL'd like that in a long time.
I love Patricia Cornwell books, I have her entire Kay Scarpetta series. I also loved Devil Wears Prada - Better than the movie. Enchanted, Inc (Similar to devil wears prada, but add magic), I read tons of romance novels - mostly ones my grandmother hands down to me, but my favorites are Debbie Maccomber - especially her Blossom Street series.
My sister & I often swap back & forth books as well, we've read the twilight series, The Emily Griffin books, Nicholas Sparks books, A few Chelsea Handler books. I also liked "A Little bit Wicked" by Kristin Chenoweth.
So jealous!! I would love to read a book a day for the next two weeks! Here are some that I've read recently....
Faith by Jennifer Haigh (it's based in Boston)
Silver Girl by Elin Hildenbrand
Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe
Friendship Bread by Darien Gee
Anything by Chelsea Handler, just read Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me and I laughed through the whole thing!
My go to mindless vacation reads are Jodi Piccoult, Nicholas Sparks, Emily Giffin, Jane Green, Sophie Kinsella. Currently I'm on a lot of parenting books but some other stuff that I've read this year and enjoyed are:
The Happiness Project - Gretchen Rubin
Two Kisses for Maddy - Matthew Logelin
Let's Take the Long Way Home - Gail Caldwell
While I'm Falling - Laura Moriarty
The Secret Life of Bees - Sue Monk Kidd
Olive Kittridge - Elizabeth Strout
Are you on Goodreads? If you aren't, you should be! And then you should be my friend on there because I am Goodreads-obsessed megangelos at yahoo dot com.
The Tana French Dublin Murder series is really good...I was underwhelmed by In the Woods, but liked the last two a lot. We're reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks for book club, non-fiction, so far very good. The Shadow of the Wind was one of the best books I read this year; Spanish gothic book-related. I also really liked Cutting for Stone and the Paris Wife. I just finished Daughter of Smoke and Bone last night which is YA paranormal and really good. I've been on a YA bender recently which is new for me, but it's been enjoyable. For YA I also liked Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door...super cute and good for a vacation.
