Raisins vs. Candy

I am doing some packing for our weekend away. I bought some snacks for myself and V since we'll mostly be wandering around without DH and I want to make things as easy on myself as possible. Anyway, I bought almonds for me and raisins/dried blueberries/dried mango for me and V.

I realize fruit has sugar but my SIL was like 'why not just buy her Skittles and get it over with?' I was like...pardon me? And she went on to say how she noticed I give V peanut butter, lots of fruit, etc and sugar in excess causes obesity. I asked what she thought I should pack for snacks, she said maybe steamed veggies or something.

Firstly, I do give my child vegetables, but a) travelling with some steamed vegetables sounds messy and stupid when dried foods are so easy and b) I'm basically using these foods as bribes/distraction as we travel, good luck using broccoli on that. Frig.

Do you consider raisins/dried fruit (in this particular case mangoes and blueberries) healthier than candy?

Re: Raisins vs. Candy

  • Yes, I do.  Dried fruit is sweet, but it's usually natural sugars, and while to your brain, glucose is glucose, I always feel better if it's a natural source of sugar, rather than added refined sugar.  Also, dried fruit is also a source of fiber.  Most candies are not good sources of fiber.  As long as it's dried fruit alone, and not yogurt or chocolate covered dried fruit, I think it's definitely healthier than candy.

    Fruit =/= candy

    She's stoopid.

  • Huge Eye Roll at SIL right now.

First, candy is made to be addictive with the type of sugar used.

Dried fruit (especially if you get it from a whole foods type place with no added sugar), has a lot of fiber (like PP mentioned).  Utopia would be to give it to LO with a source of good protien also (cheese, milk, etc.).

I think I read something in your post about peanut butter.  It is loaded with good fat (again, organic, or even almond butter is great) and a tea spoon with some apple is a perfect snack.

    You're right..she's wrong :)

  • I don't even know what to say about that! My parents wouldn't let us have refined sugar, but we had tons of fruit. That's such a weird thing to say.

(I have noticed that a ton of dried fruit has added sugar at my local grocery store and I have to watch for it, but it's still going to be better than pure sugar!)

And I'm giggling at the thought of bringing steamed veggies around with you for days.

  • Yes, dried fruit is a better choice than candy.  Not sure what your SIL is thinking on this one.

  • Ughhhh. Thanks ladies! I agree about fiber, refined sugar, etc. It's not like fruit is all I feed her obviously, but what annoyed me most about the attitude is that...GASP, sometimes I do give my child some chocolate or some donut or whatever if we are eating it. She's going to be fine. Really.

I really like my SIL, but sometimes I get the feeling she just has the urge to say something contradicting my words/actions just for her health. haha 2 more days!

  • Does she have kids? She seriously thinks that fruit is the same as candy? Um, no. It is not the same, at all. Sugares in fruit are naturally occurring. I want to see a kid who snacks on steamed veggies all the time and I will shake their hand and tell them good job because they will be the only ones.

  • There is a fair amount of sugar in dried fruit to be honest, but it ain't no skittles.  I give raisens all the time.  But I would also suggest, rice cakes and bread sticks, as carbs will keep V more sustained, if you aren't near anything and she is still acting hungry after giving her the fruit.

  • Oh, puh-leeze. It's not like you are going to give out 3-cup servings of dried fruit and 1/2-cup servings of peanut butter. Roll your eyes at SIL behind her back and go with your plan.

Besides, why is she commenting on obesity if your child isn't anywhere near overweight?

Totally! And luckily my girl loves her carbs too...rice crackers are plentiful here and I even MADE some pumpkin graham cracker things in my friggin' toaster oven.

My SIL doesn't have kids, flcrb, and she actually is a tad crazy. Gotta love her.

  • crazy lady - yea you can tell she doesn't have kids

dried fruit certainly does NOT equal candy!!!

I have read not to give babies more than 1/4 cup of dried fruit a day, but Genna loves dried fruit and has it almost every day

we also do crackers, breadsticks (those hard dried ones - she loves crunching them), cereals to snack on like cheerios, fresh blueberries in a little tupperwear, or even some veg you don't really have to keep chilled all day - like steamed carrot sticks or peas or corn. I often pack a little bit of that to give her throughout the day. But yea - you gotta do what's convenient when you're out and about - and really - one day of lots of dried fruit will cause NO harm!! :)
