BR: Sleep and Milestones

Finally on a regular computer since we are on Christmas break from school.  Questions for BWLO!

T is doing wonderful.  All over the place, gabbering away, eats like a champ (there isn't anything we have found she won't eat, very social (as long as mommy or gma are in sight), etc.

However she is almost 14 months and still not walking on her own.  She will walk one handed with someone, walk around a table or couch, but she just will not walk if it means letting go.  We have seriously been saying for about 4 months now that it would be anytime.  Anyone else have a late walker?  I'm just afraid she is spoiled from being carried and we need to do something to help her along.

Secondly, sleep.  We are going to try old fashioned cry it out after Christmas (this week our schedule is far from normal).  For the past 2-3 weeks she wakes up between 1:30 and 2 and will not go back to sleep in her bed.  She will fall asleep on me in the rocker but them minute I put her in her bed her eyes shoot open and she starts screaming.  This lasts for 3-4 hours.  This mama is TIRED!

Any suggestions :)

Re: BR: Sleep and Milestones

  • Late walker here. Evie would not even walk, holding on to anything, holding hands, etc for a while. Then a week before 14 months, she started to walk! Out of nowhere. I bet she is taking her time and waiting till she knows she can do it on her own to walk.

Good luck with the sleep training. Hard during it. But so worth it for a kid who can sleep well and you will be in such a better mood too!

  • We have a late walker, too. Nora is 15 months and although she FINALLY started taking steps and walking this past month, she is still not a "full-time" walker. I know it's hard not to stress out about it (ask Jennrs, I Facebook messaged her about it, because Neena was a late walker, too!), but the spectrum for what is "normal" is so wide--kids can start walking anytime between 9-18 months! If she's cruising along the furniture and stuff, she's making progress. Once we got to 14 months, we started "encouraging" walking more instead of just carrying her everywhere. We'd be in the store and we'd let her walk for a little bit holding onto our hands, etc. but it really did come on her own time.

As for the waking at night--could she be cutting teeth?

  • Evan was a late walker. I swear he was cruising along furniture for at least 3 months. Then walking holding onto one hand. We would eventually get him to take 5 steps or so between DH and I. He did that for at least a month. Then just last week he decided he was going to do it. Just like Evie, a week before his 14 month birthday which was Saturday. I honestly thought he'd never do it. But now he'd rather walk than crawl. It's amazing how in a few days time he totally changed into this little person walking all around.

So don't get discouraged. T will get there.

  • I kid you not Jane went from nothing to crawling to walking in like 7 weeks!!  She started crawling right around 9 months and walked at 11.5.  I swear she crawled for like a week before she started realizing she could pull up, then cruise, etc.

They learn so much so fast that you'll be amazed.  I bet one day she just does it.

As for sleep - I don't know if T was STTN but I've heard that as they are learning/processing a new major thing (like walking) it can impact their sleep and they make wake up at night.

Hoping you get some more sleep soon!  You'll need it once T is running everywhere!! :)

  • Concerning sleep, is she teething?  Ryan has been STTN regularly, but then he hits a period of cutting teeth and he wakes up and only wants to sleep with me - this goes on for a week or so and then he goes back to STTN.

We have also hit the stage where he is dreaming / nightmares and will sometimes wake and start to cry.  He did this again just last week for about 4 nights straight.  He only falls back to sleep in bed with us.

Good luck, I hope she starts STTN soon!

  • Late walker. Best advice I ever got: don't push it! she will walk when she is ready. And, they were right. Plus, walking is a 18-month milestone. :-)

As for sleeping, Neena didn't STTN night until 19 months, so I have no advice.

  • Most babies walk between 12-18 months, its not until 18 months that most pedis might become concerned and recommend early intervention.  If she wasn't showing any signs of walking, then I'd be concerned, but you said she is walking with assistance so I am sure its just a matter of time and her becoming more confident!

As for sleeping, I don't have any advice because we have good sleepers so they were STTN at 4 months.  We did promote self-soothing from the beginning and established a routine so I think that really helped.  Good luck!

  • Landon started crawling at 8.5 months, and was standing and cruising withing 2 weeks. Around that time, he had sleep regression. He would wake up around 1-2am and scream for an hour. I would finally go get him (we've always promoted self-soothing, and he typically STTN at least 10 hours) and rock him back to sleep.

That lasted about 1.5 weeks, then he just started sleeping again.

I agree with what Naylon said about their minds being so active. I read in my AAP book that around 9 months they sometimes experience sleep regression because their bodies are so busy learning to crawl, walk, etc that their minds can't shut off.

If your LO is a late walker, maybe this phase is just happening later?

It's so hard to tell because they can't tell you what's wrong!
