Do you tip your HHG movers?

H and I had this discussion for our last PCS, and he insists that you don't need to tip the packers and/or movers for a military move because everything is taken care of.  Most of our military friends I have talked to say that they also don't tip, but I just wanted to ask more people with our upcoming move and H not being here for it.

I know that tipping is supposed to be based off quality of service performed, but just in general I'm wondering do you tip your packers and/or movers?

Re: Do you tip your HHG movers?

  • NO no no no no.  TMO very specifically told us during all our outprocessing briefings not to tip.

  • We didn't tip or provide lunch but we did fill up the sink with ice and lots of different drinks. They brought their own lunch and took a 1/2 hour-45 min lunch break down by the truck.
  • And I'm pretty sure movers are sick of pizza so we got them a tray of subs from subway. But the PP are right, tipping is not allowed.

Yeah I thought of that for the last time and planned on getting subs.  Their moving truck was blocking our cars last time and I asked them if they would want to move it and I would go get subs or just leave it and I would order pizza, so they picked pizza.

Thanks ladies!  I really should have asked at the PPO office when I set up the move but I just wasn't even thinking about it at the time.

  • Don't tip.  I didn't provide them full lunch since they changed the time they were coming on me 3 times and I couldn't plan between breakfast and lunch.  I just laid out a few snack (ritz cheese crackers and chocolate chip cookies) and some coke.

My only advice is if you are going to give them lunch, I wouldn't do anything too greasy (like Pizza) if they are going to be unpacking your goods (curtains/clothes/sheets etc).

  • No one told us not to tip, so we did. I also offered pizza and from the looks I got, I could tell they weren't excited so I asked what they wanted. They wanted subway or quiznos. I got them that and they were thankful. Now I didn't tip the a-holes who unloaded us. Long story, but they showed up with just the driver and his SON...no one else, so my dad and my husband ended up basically unloading the whole load. I was pissed.
  • Now I don't have to feel guilty for forgetting to tip.

We did get pizza for the last people since they showed up at 1115, and I was hungry.  From the way they devoured it, I'm thinking they were appreciative.

I wish I could go back 4 years ago and anti-tip the people who packed my furniture so terribly that it's all banged up and partially destroyed now.

  • We had lemonade and water since it was 120* when they were moving. I planned to have lunch for them but the they showed up hours late and only after I called to see where the heck they were. So they got chips, cheese and crackers.
