Job Search Questions

Do you guys always include a cover letter with your resume? I see a lot of places give you the option of uploading one with your resume. So I feel like it is "the thing to do" but when I was hiring people, I always hated reading through them and really just wanted to look at the resume.

Also, do you have an objective on your resume? I always did but I'm being told that more recently, people leave them off. Most employers like a resume that is impressive but also short and to the point.

Re: Job Search Questions

  • ugh, job hunting is such a shot in the dark. It seems like every company/random-person-looking-at-resumes is looking for something different.

I sometimes do cover letters, but only if I have one from another application that I can just sort of spruce up and use to quickly list my qualifications/interests. And no, I don't have an objective anymore - I mean, really, the objective is to get a job. and make money. Everyone's is the same, it's a waste of time for me to write and the employer to have to read. :)

agreed. If the job is a more "descriptive" type and a CL can get your tone across, then yes. But if you're applying to be an accountant (no offense, Noelle) your ability to be gramatically correct is kinda moot.

And no objective. They're trite and old fashioned.

Objective: Get a MFing job so I can pay my bills!

    none taken!
  • I think you only need an objective when your experience looks a little off the mark. A summary is better when you have a few years of experience in your field. Instead of an objective try a "Summary of Qualifications" - Seven years of progressive accounting experience with strong financial reporting and payroll management. (this is totally made up but hope it gives you an idea)
