Planning International Travel

Hello Travel Nesties!

Dh and I are planning a trip to Europe with my parents.  My dad has traveled a lot (he's a professional pilot), however, most of his international traveling has been planned for him, and for work (plus HE was the transportation!)  Are there any good guides or resources out there to help for planning that you've used and would suggest?

We are undecided about a trip for 7-10 days to Ireland or a 2 week trip and hitting several "hot" spots.  We are in the VERY early beginning stages obviously - so we're doing research to decide.

Thanks!

Re: Planning International Travel

  • There are some good paper guides out there like Fodors & Travel for Dummies.  They make them specifically for each place.

Tripadvisor.com is one of my favorites.  Fodors also has a site but I don't know the URL.

  • Frommers website has limited travel guides with summaries and highlights.  I usually start there to narrow down destinations for my next trip.  When I've decided on a location, I go buy the full guide book and start coming up with a rough itinerary.  Then I set up a fare watch on kayak.com and keep an eye on airfare, and usually book several months out (fares become available about 11 months out).  I research accommodations on tripadvisor and then compare rates from different websites or from the hotel itself.  The last thing I do is come up with rough list of attractions and restaurants I want to try to get to - when you have your must-see list, check the visiting hours and make note of them so you can plan accordingly.
  • Have you thought about going to see a travel agent? I know they come with the connotation of being expensive, but most I've chatted with are free.  Maybe just look into meeting with one, they could surprise you with the knowledge they have.
