San Antonio?

I'm trying to plan a 3 day trip to San Antonio for the day after Christmas. It'll be for my hubby's birthday. I have been before about 15 years ago. Any recs on things to do? restaurants? etc? Thanks.

Re: San Antonio?

  • We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort San Antonio after our wedding, and it was so nice! The food was amazing and the lazy river was really fun. It's about 30 minutes from the city but it's convenient if you want to go to Sea World or drive 20 minutes to Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

Of course, you MUST do a riverwalk cruise and have dinner at a nice restaurant like Biga on the Bank  or go to the Chart House restaurant at the Tower of the Americas, which is a fun thing to do even if you don't eat there.

  • Walk along Riverwalk, shop, eat and drink and take a boat cruise, tour the Alamo, visit the missions and El Mercado.
  • Take a drive out to Hill Country, it's beautiful! (Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Boerne areas)

Southtown is a neat little eclectic "hippie" type area that used to be rundown, but now a lot of artists, etc are bringing it back, so there's lots of cool bars, shops, galleries and stuff.

  • We really enjoyed our meals at Boudros on the River Walk.  The Menger Hotel bar was pretty cool as well (I think this is where Roosevelt recruited his rough riders, if I am remembering correctly).

  • Eat at Casa Rio on the Riverwalk or try Rosarios - both good Mexican food :)

    Eat at La Fogata!

YES!!!!   This may have been my favorite meal in San Antonio. Cheap and delicious!

We stayed at Westin LaCantera.  I would definitely recommend it as an alternative to staying on the Riverwalk.  It is walking distance to Six Flags, and a short drive to the Riverwalk.  We also spent a day visiting Hill Country wineries.

Yes you definitely have to try Boudros. I think someone here actually reconmmended it to me for my anniversary and it was delicious.

I agree with pp, checkout the riverwalk and the Alamo area. There is also a really good Mexican restaurant near the riverwalk called "Mi Tierra" I think. They have some good food and mariachis.

  • If you want to experience the Country dancing scene, then go to Cowboys dancehall http://cowboysdancehall.com/San-Antonio/. Not sure their holiday schedule.

Also Missions National Park (which includes the Alamo).

  • Another rec for Mi Tierra....SO yummy. And I think they are open 24 hours a day. We had an awesome brunch there.
  • The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa was just named one of the World's 500 Best Hotels by Travel and Leisure Magazine.  It's fabulous, and set in Hill Country not far from Gruene (eat at the Gristmill and go to the dance hall!), Frederickberg, New Braunfels, etc.  Definitely spend a full day downtown, or even spend just one night downtown to do a pub/bar crawl if you're into that.  I find downtown to be a little crowded/touristy for my taste on the weekends, and really only go down there if I have friends in town.  There are so many wonderful little random places to eat in San Antonio.  The Sea World here is very nice and well done, better than the one in Orlando.
