How old is too old for kids to be taken to visit Santa?

My brother just posted a picture on FB of my niece (7) and nephew (14) sitting on Santa's lap. WTF. How could she possibly still believe in Santa with a teenage brother??

Re: How old is too old for kids to be taken to visit Santa?

  • Didn't you see Kuus' post about a week ago? I believe she was in the teen years before figuring it out.

    Although her idea of Santa was aliens and robots. It was the best Kuusmas ever.

    Oh, FFS.
  • My mom, sister and I went to tell Santa what we wanted (at Macy's in NYC) a few years ago.  We were the only adults there that didn't have their kids in tow.  Santa and his elves LOVED us and I still cherish the pic of the three of us there (my mom has a pic of her with the Macy's Santa when she was a little girl).

    So... my answer is NEVER!

  • I guess I was just surprised to see a teenage boy sitting on Santa's lap with his little sister, but maybe he's just much saintlier than your average 14yo boy. Either that or he still believes in Santa himself. ::shudders::
  • My mom complained that she didn't have any pictures of the three of us together, so we got our picture taken with Santa one year.  I am the oldest and I was an adult by that point.  We didn't ruin Santa for my youngest brother.  We never believed that mall Santas were the real Santa.  I don't plan on telling DD that they are real.  If you saw the sad looking Santa here, there is no way you could pull that off.  His fake beard was falling off and you could see the string holding it on and his black beard underneath.

  • I'm also realizing that I'm probably a of a small minority view that we infantilize children too long in our society, compared to the far larger majority "they grow up too faaaaaast!" viewpoint.

    I mean, I'm all for letting kids be kids in age-appropriate ways, but at a certain point you're gonna get made fun of at school.

  • My middle school and high school both had Santa photo fundraisers for charities. Nothing like looking at a picture of a 6'5 varsity basketball player sitting on Santa's knee.

    But that's a different story...
  • You think 7 is too old to believe in Santa?

    well, yes. I guess for me it goes:

    5 = aww cute

    6 = isn't that sweet

    7 = ummm, haven't the kids at school clued you in yet?
