We are in the market for a new home computer and trying to decide whether to get another desktop or a laptop. I've always felt like you get more for your $$$ with a desktop but I'm really digging the idea of a laptop taking up less space.
Also, I've never owned a laptop (weird, I know).

This is what DH wants to get but I'm thinking if we do that, then might as well get a desktop, KWIM? Plus, I don't work so I wouldn't get taking it anywhere.
but the flexibility to sit anywhere in the house and do whatever it is on your laptop is awesome.
we do all our finances on the computer. We have not gotten Quicken on the new laptop so i'm so behind updating anything because I hate to sit in the study and work on the desktop by myself when I could be sitting on the couch.
if your kids are using it, ever, a desktop. kids will tear up a laptop before you know it.

This. And when something happens to a desktop it is much easier and cheaper to repair. Even harddrive recovery if your computer fries for some reason is easier on a desktop. It's also easier to upgrade RAM and data storage on a desktop.
Also, I don't know if you guys are more conscientious about backing up your files intentionally, but I find having a desktop makes this process much more reliable because I can keep your backup connected at all times and it runs on a schedule (and if you are paranoid about data loss like me you can do a semi-annual backup of your backup on a third hard drive... you know, just in case the backup gets stolen).
Granted with laptops you can do remote backups via the internet, so there is always a work-around.
If we had a second child I might reconsider and go all-laptop in our home because we'd need the office to get converted into a nursery. But if you have the space for a home desktop, it's better.

We have laptops. DH has a docking station with a ridiculously large monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
Our laptops auto-backup to a home server and we can store music, movies, etc., on that instead of taking up space on our laptops.
My right mouse button doesn't work because Tracey drooled on it. thank goodness for external mice!
People still have desktops?
I cannot imagine NOT having a laptop. I use it on the couch, at the desk, and in bed. I bring it into the kitchen to read recipes when cooking (on table, far enough away from splashes and splatters!) I use it outside on the porch, I take it on vacations, I use it at the table when I'm pumping.
It backs up every night via the web.
Good point about destructive kids.... but other than that, laptop all the way.

I do all of this, too. We have a home office and I got sick of being forced to sit in there. I love sitting on the front porch in nice weather and sometimes when the kids are at school, I'll go to a local coffee shop and just enjoy being in another environment.
i've gotten to where i dont work anywhere but a desk with my laptop. to do photo editing, i need to have it plugged in so the power doesn't vary.
most of my away-from-the-desk computing happens on the ipad... which is the greatest invention of my adult lifetime..lol.

We have both. The desktop is pretty old and we've had it restored once because of a crash, but I like using it. My desk for work has my laptop and the desktop on it and I'm now spoiled.
I like the laptop, but yes - getting it fixed is expensive. We've added a bigger battery (that is now starting to suck) and had to restore it a year ago when it crashed.
I would probably buy into the Mac craze, but holy cow those are $$.
THey are pricey but they don't crash, you don't need to buy any virus protection or extra anything, and the customer service is awesome. Worth every penny! My Mac has already lasted longer than my last Dell laptop.
I am never going back to a desktop again. I haven't used one in years and that is alright by me.
Laptops are expensive to repair, but I keep mine backed up regularly. I also don't bother repairing them, we just get a new one instead since I usually get one that is $400 or so at Microcenter. I think I am on my third laptop or so?
So Tasty, So Yummy
That precisely. And I have used mine almost every day for hours a day.. I got it in early 2008.

My dad's $$$ MacBook has crashed twice. Once only a week out of the warranty. BUT Apple was awesome and replaced the computer with a new one, but he lost everything on it that hadn't been backed up. He makes fun of me and my disposable laptops, but three laptops in and I haven't spent nearly the money that he has. I think he just likes hanging out at the Apple store, he even takes the little classes they offer.
