NSOR: If you've been to Vegas, come in!
Where did you stay? What did you do? What time of year did you go and what was the weather like?
FF and I have two plane tickets to use up before the end of July (his step-sister in Seattle called off her June wedding) and we're thinking Vegas. I'd love to hear ideas and input for what to see and do and where to stay!
Re: NSOR: If you've been to Vegas, come in!
The two times I've gone, I've gone in June. Perfect time of year, IMO. I loved that time of year and the weather. We just hung out by the pool and drank most of the time!
ETA: We stayed at the Flamingo. Something that was really fun, and more low-key was go to the piano bar in NY, NY. I liked the Flamingo pool and location, but didn't think the rooms were very nice.
I went in late March, and it was a little chilly to sit by the pool. We froze at night. Days were lovely, though. Stayed in a friend's timeshare on the strip. I forget what it was called, but it was nice. I'd definitely recommend staying on the strip.
Oddly enough, my two favorite places were off the beaten path. If you like karaoke, beer and crazy characters, you must go to Ellis Island. It's a run-down, depressing dive of a casino with an amazing karaoke bar. People are fun and friendly. They make their own beers that are quite good and super cheap -- I want to say $1.50 for a 24 oz mug. The casino itself is a pit. It smells. But that bar is pure magic.
Food-wise, make sure you go to Firefly, in the old part of Vegas. Amazing tapas, very affordable -- and killer pitchers of sangria and mojitos.
The strip is a blast, and wondering is fun. It definitely makes sense to stay on the strip, but please don't ONLY stay on the strip. You'll need a break from the glitz.
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
I've been there several times, the last time being in April - it was actually pretty cold. We had one warm day at the pool - otherwise, we walked around in sweaters. We stayed at the Trop - it was ok..nothing great but nothing horrible.
Since my friend and I have been there several times, we decided to do "off the beaten path" things. We rented a jeep and did Valley of Fire State Park which is about 1 hour north of Vegas. It was amazing, red rock, it snowed, we hiked and drove around all afternoon. It was perfect. The following day we drove 3 hours to the Grand Canyon - seriously, it was worth the 3 hours back and forth. I've never seen anything so amazing in my life. Walk the skywalk which was the scariest thing I've ever done but so worth it.
Years ago when I was there, we rented jet skis and a boat on Lake Meade...so wonderful and did the hoover damn.
We also did the light show at Fremont Street - all I can say is, that's where the FREAKS play...crazy people. But good people watching entertainment.
Food: Nine in the Palms is super good, Tacos and Tequila at the Luxor was good...great 'rita's. I agree with Ellis Island...dive place but fun. We also ate at the top of the Stratosphere, awesome place with a great view - plus the restaurant is moving so you get see everything.
Awesome suggestions, thanks ladies!
I didn't realize the Grand Canyon was only 3 hrs away. We'd both LOVE to see it, so it might be something to consider...
Fremont Street is such a riot! I love it so much!

I stayed at the Excaliber (don't recommend) and Ceasers Palace (recommend)
I went in April and it was like 65-70 ish most of the time but we did have one day where it was chilly. I personally liked going to shows the best (I saw KA and I loved it).
The drive to the grand canyon was amazing too. But if you decide to do it, rent a Jeep or a 4x4, it's a dirt road, lots of S turns, gravel, pot holes...just a crazy 15 miles drive. If you're interested in seeing my pictures on FB, send me a PM and I'll give you my name to add me.
First time I went, we stayed off the strip at a Best Western. It was for work, so that doesn't really count. It was summer time and it was SO freaking hot out!
Second time, I stayed right next to Ballys (can't remember the hotel). Maybe the Golden Nugget or something? Really cheesy place. That was in March, and it was a little chilly, but nice to sight see.
Third time, I stayed at the Cosmopolitan and it was in August. Beautiful weather!!
I highly recommend the Cosmopolitan (great location, amazing hotel, very chic and has great restaurants and an awesome bar called the Chandelier bar).
Definitely see a Cirque du Soleil show, watch the Bellagio fountains, and go out to dinner at a swanky place (Fix is an awesome steakhouse in the Bellagio, fyi).
ENJOY!
I go quite frequently and usually stay at the Aria or the Wynn. I love both places!
I usually do dinner (there are so many delicious restaurants), a show (Cirque, Absinthe, La Reve, check to see if there is a music venue going on when you're there), and shop! Since this will be your first time, you would probably enjoy everythng there, a very unique place.
Early/late summer is probably the best time to go unless you enjoy the HEAT!!!
Let me know if you want to know anything specific, I'll be there for NYE
Growing up in SoCal means vegas is the weekend getaway of choice. I would stay at Mandalay Bay, Mirage, Cesars, Bellagio, Treasure Island, Wynn, Aria, Planet Hollywood or MGM. Make sure you stop by the customer service desks at all the hotels you will gamble at and you will get a player's card. You can earn free comps on food, shows and even rooms (if you are a high roller). There are really great discount tickets for shows at the Planet hollywood mall and the mall next to Treasure Island. I would see a cirque show if you can. There are also some really funny comededy shows. Also, the buffet at Treasure Island, Cesars, Paris and Bellagio are my favorite.
My favorite thing to do while there is to lay out all day, take a little nap in the afternoon then go to dinner and a show (or just walk the strip) at night. To me spring through fall is best depending on how hot you can handle. Oh yeah do not attempt to wear high heels unless you are taking a taxi every where you go- even then wear flats!!
