Puppy food question ::paging Pixy:: and puppy pics

The shelter we adopted Cooper from gave us a bag of Purina One for puppies. I know that's far from the best food out there. Does anyone have any rec's? He's a lab, retriever, hound, and possibly pointer mix. TMI but he has a minor case of the runs since we got him last weekend and I'm sure the food is to blame. He's 2 months old and just over 10 lbs.

On the upside. the pup is SMART. Seriously. I'm floored! He is so great at letting us know he has to go potty and goes right away when we take him outside. The boy is brilliant I tell you. I decided to ignore what people say about crate training and he's doing great with that now (before he whined like crazy when he was in there). Now he has the whole crate (I took out the puppy partition and it's a big crate for 70 lbs dogs) with a big fluffy bed, food and water, toys, and some chew bones. He loves it! He loves chillin' in there.

He has been completely accident free all day. He only had 1 accident last night and it was totally our fault.

Re: Puppy food question ::paging Pixy:: and puppy pics

  • Our puppy is a Weim mix and he did really well on Avoderm Chicken and Brown Rice. I really liked it. Weims have a lot of sensitivities to foods and grains and this was great for us and not soooooo expensive. Now that we are back in California, he eats Trader Joe's food.

  • We have been using science diet since the day we rescued him and he has never had any tummy issues and seems to think it's tasty!  Plus it isn't uber expensive and they give coupons in all their bags.
  • He's SO cute!!!! He looks almost identical to our dog when she was a puppy (her coloring has changed slightly as she has gotten older).  I don't have any recs on food.  We feed our dog a grain-free food because she has allergies.  Before we changed her to a grain-free one she was on Blue buffalo for awhile until that started messing with her tummy and then she was iams and she did the best on that food, but she eventually started having issues on it.
  • We have always fed Canidae and our dogs always really liked it. We've also used Kirkland brand - it's really reasonably priced and a decent food, especially for the money. Check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ - the higher the rating, the better, obviously.

Science Diet is not a good food.  The Pets board FAQ has some good info on dog food.

  • I'm feeding Luca the salmon and sweet potato from Costco.  The grain free eliminated his urinary crystals.  I think the manufacturer is Wellness, but it's sold under the Kirkland label.

Science Diet is not a good food - read the link from Swinsto to find out more about it and other better brands ;)

  • Good luck with the tummy puppy issues, that can be rough.  My girls both eat the Wellness brand and love it.  It's rated really well, and I know the major chain stores have started carrying it now (though I shop at Wag N Wash).
  • Good luck with the tummy problems.  Our pup had them for a while when he was a little guy as well.  We were feeding him Wellness, and it turns out that he was allergic to the primary protein source that was in the food.  We've switched him over to Fromm Duck & Sweet Potato formula & he's done phenomenally well.

    Good luck! :)

no identifiable siggy pictures anymore, thanks a lot stupid nest!
  • We feed our dogs Canidae, and one of our girls has a sensitive tummy and that seems to work well for her.  We were doing All Stages, but recently switched over to Senior since they are old ladies now...lol.
  • Our dog was on science diet for like the first month after we rescued him since they sent it with us and we figured it wasn't good to switch a bunch of things. It's not a good food and thankfully since we took him off it he hasn't been having ear problems.

We feed him Blue Buffalo. Gromit's favorites are the fish & sweet potato & lamb & brown rice.

I think the website has it rated as 4 stars so it's not the best but it's affordable and a good food that solved up his health complications.

  • We've always fed our pups innova.  It's quite expensive, but they're worth it.
  • Thanks for the heads up on science diet!
  • Yup, peruse dogfoodanalysis - We feed California Natural.  Wellness is a good brand, which you can find at PetCo. The food is going to be more expensive, but you feed less of it than foods loaded with fillers.

Watch his poop. Should it at any time start to have blood in it, go to your vet right away.

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • He is so cute!

We feed Miller Blue Buffalo (the senior variety, he's 12). I add a spoonful of canned food (also BB) every meal - mostly to hide his pills (he has 3) because he won't eat them otherwise. We've been very happy with it.
