non-clicky poll - sick days

What's the most consecutive unscheduled sick days you've taken from a job?

This lady told me the other day she was out sick from work for a week and I thought that was really shocking.  I repeated it to a friend and she seemed to think taking a week off for being sick isn't that unusual.

Re: non-clicky poll - sick days

  • I was out sick for a week with the stomach flu.  when I called my boss on day 5 and told her I was feeling better she told me to stay home just in case - she was leaving on vacation in 2 days and REALLY didn't want to catch anything.
  • maybe 2 days. i dont stay sick for long.

  • 2 or 3 days max for a really bad flu/stomach issue. We're supposed to have a doctor's note if we're out for longer than that.
  • Maybe a 1/2 day....  I live on road, so since I traveled all the way there and am billable, I usually have to go in.  The client does have the right to send me home though.

  • One year I had the flu and I took off work on a Tuesday. I thought I was better Wednesday so I went in. Then I took off Thursday and Friday because I wasn't better. So 3 days in a week, but not consecutive. I don't think I'd ever take off a whole week.

  • Beside Mat leave?

I've taken 5 days off in a row for various things - 2 d&c's. One year I took off close to two weeks - I had the flu, pink eye and my grandmother died.

  • The sickest I was while working was the year I had the flu... I only took a day off though b/c it started on the Friday of a long weekend, lasted through the weekend, and then I had an observation on Monday that I needed to be at work for, so I went into work (even though I really should have been home...), but took off Tuesday.  I wasn't 100% on Wednesday, but went in b/c getting a sub and having to deal w/ sub plans is such a PITA.
  • 1 day.

I was out "sick" for 5 days for my laser eye surgery, but that was scheduled.

  • One day, unscheduled, here and there.  I don't take sick time if I can help it since I've been hoarding leave since I started.   I have never taken more than one day in a row since i've been at my current job (for sick days.)

I'm also stubborn and refuse to admit I'm sick until a few days in so if I was better about just admitting it I'd probably be home more (I'm not trying to be that obnoxious person who goes to work sick, I just don't realize how sick I am.)

At my work I have to have a doctor's note for anything more than 3 days.

  • Other than maternity leaVe I took three week once for gallbladder surgery and recovery. Normally a day or two.

  • I'm kind of like Becky, I'm stubborn and think I can just push through it until I'm at the point where I physically can't function, but that really doesn't happen often.  Maybe 2 consecutive days, minus ML of course.  I don't think a week is crazy if you have a serious illness though.  It's probably better to stay at home and recover fully than push yourself, says the girl who never does that.

  • My second year of teaching I was out for 2 days, then I came back for a day and was out for another 2- I had strep and a double ear infection.  That's the most I've ever missed at one time (not counting maternity leave).

Its usually easier to come to work then to write lesson plans for a sub.  If I have to get out of bed and come to school to get stuff ready, then I might as well just go to work.

  • Up until this year 2, maybe 3 days was the max but 3 was really pushing it.

Then I got sick really bad this past Halloween/first week of November and I was out for 6 days straight...came back and still wasn't 100%.  I felt absolutely guilty and terrible about not coming in but there was no way I could have. It was the first time in my 12 year working career that I had missed more than 4 days of work.

  • I normally try to push through it but sometimes that back fires and I feel even worse.  I can see taking 3 days or even a week if you are really sick.

  • I took 4 days last year when I had a kidney stone. Taking time off of work is tough because I have to make up all of the missed therapy time since I don't get a sub.

  • I was out 5 days for my D&C, it was only supposed to be 2 but as you know there were complications.  I've never taken more than 2 days of sick leave in a row.
  • When I call out sick it's usually for a day or two. If need be, I can call out for longer but I'd need a doctor's note.
  • 1 day max and it's been rare (knock on wood!).  Most of the time I get sick over the weekends - not fun!
