Just had my appointment and feeling MUCH better. I think they understand that I am clueless and may need some extra hand holding so I will see mainly doctors from now on.
My results are 1: 620 for ds and 1: 10,000 for the other stuff.
Based on these results we may skip the Amnio, but still need to discuss with DH. The good news is that the office has a VERY low miscarriage/ complication rate so if do decide to move forward without that's good to know. I guess we'll make a definitive decision after the second sequential screen.
Also heard the heartbeat, so baby still seems in good shape.
YAY!
Re: Update.
Hi. :-)
Glad the results were good!
HOLYSHIIT
I hope that I may offer my congratulations to you guys.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
are you going to do the 2nd blood draw at 16weeks for spina bifida?
i'm doing the whole shebang. i love numbers.
I kind of figured it out with some help.
Congrats!!!!
Ditto.
Yeah I realize after 9 years of marriage we're not at the top of the list of likely to procreate couples, but here we are!
SD, oh yeah - we're doing all the blood test stuff and are still vagually considering the amnio, but with the odds we got we may can it. Unsure - we were out with friends for dinner tonight so haven't had a chance to discuss yet.
dun dun dun dunnnnn.
you were a teensy bit transparent.
Congrats. Keep growing the baby. Good luck!!!
Congrats! And best of luck!
Question for you or for whoever -- I'm confused over the talk of amnio. I thought amnios were done only in cases where your numbers were "risky"; not something you would opt for if your numbers came back at a very healthy range, like NMBFM. Am I wrong? Is this commonly done with normal results too?
Aww and I was trying so hard to throw everyone off the scent. ; )
Thanks!
Well clearly I am not the most well informed person on this subject, but my understanding is that it is down to the parents to decide what they want to do.
I was under the impression that the NT scan had a high case of false positives AND false negatives (which is why we thought the amnio would be good to do in addition to NT), but the doctor yesterday said it has a high rate of false positives, but actually a very low rate of false negatives. Which is reassuring.
I don't know that it is commonly done with normal results, but it definitely can be and lots of couples do. I would have thought for most people a normal NT would be enough, but some people want to know for sure.
Not sure which group we fall in to yet!

Honestly, I think there are a lot of misconceptions about the NT test and 'positive' and 'negative'. This is not a positive and negative test. I hate that some doctors even refer to it that way. It's risk ratios and percentages, or likelihood. It's not a predictive or diagnostic test. The point of it is to decide if your risk is high enough to warrant further invasive testing which can give you more definite results.
For instance, my ratios were something to the effect of 1:5,000 for ds and 1:7,500 or something like that for T18. We decided the odds were good the baby was clear of these chromosomal issues and didn't warrant further invasive testing.
That's not what I meant by 'false positive' or 'negative'.
What I meant was the NT test can give results like 1: 7 for example, then the Amnio gets done and there's actually no chance at all.
So it can cause some anxiety for expectant parents if they are given results which are way off. Perhaps just saying that the results are not particularly accurate is a better way of putting it.
amnio is up to 99% accurate, when NT scan 1 is only 75-80% accurate.
so if your first nt and second nt left you unsure b/c of your percentages you can get an amnio done still. or if you just like tests and needles in your belly you can have it done.
its up to the mother really.
also there are two parts to the nt testing. the first didnt look at spina bifida at all.
