WWIND? Fertility related

Nesties, I need advice, specifically from those of you who have experience with the NHS.

I have mild PCOS and that is most likely the reason DH and I have yet to conceive. Everything else is fine.  There is a two to three months wait for the NHS.  Would you go private?  My GP suggested I start on Clomid, although there is still a chance we will be successful naturally.

http://www.thebridgecentre.co.uk/ This is the place I am looking at.

It looks like it would cost around 250 GBP.  We can afford it.

Does anyone have experience with fertility treatments with the NHS?  Or the Bridge Centre?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: WWIND? Fertility related

  • I don't have experience with fertility treatments on the NHS but do have experience going private vs the NHS and if you can afford it I would personally do it.

  • If you can afford it, it's a non-issue for me - go private. You can always catch up with the NHS later. I went private for physical therapy after getting injured during my surgery in September and it was a great experience. I 'still' haven't gotten the call from the NHS physio (apparently there's a 12-16 week waiting list). If I don't get pregnant in the next few months, I'm seeing my doctor and we'll go private if needed for sure.

  • Not NHS related but I would never start an unmonitored Clomid cycle--you can have major issues if you're not monitored.  Are you on Metaformin (can't spell the PCOS drug)?  Most PCOS patients try this first if I'm not mistaken...

If going to a private reproductive endocrinologist/gyn is the option, I would definitely chose that over a GP, especially if you can afford it.

This and this.  Please, whatever you decide, do not take Clomid unless you are being monitored on it.  OHSS is very common with PCOS-ers.  Metformin is no fun, but is usually the first course of treatment for PCOS (I was on it for a year).

There is a UK board.  I have read that girls on there wished they didn't waste time on the NHS.

We should meet up after you're back from the US.

I am not on any medicine for PCOS and I've heard Clomid is very common.  Of course, I would never do it unmonitored, this would be through a private fertility specialist as opposed to a NHS fertility specialist.

Thanks for the site and we should!  We leave on Friday and are back the first Thursday of the New Year!  Speak soon!

  • I would go private if you can afford it.  Is 250 GBP the all in cost though?  They may require you to do some testing with them first, before putting you on clomid (or metformin as others have mentioned), and then have the monitoring appointments, so it may add up to more.

Also, keep in mind that the doctors you see privately are generally the same doctors you see through the NHS, so the quality of care is the same, just usually the wait is shorter if you go privately.

Good luck with it, have a good time at home, and we should catch up in the new year!

  • I cannot speak for the NHS, but we started our testing in the public system here but ended up going private.  Of course it was expensive, but our clinic was great and we had a good experience. It was much better to be able to work on my/our schedule rather then wait around for when the public system could fit us in. So if you can afford it I would go privately.

Thanks, no that is not all in.   The initial first appointment is less than that, but based on what the GP suggested, that is what I figured.  At this point, I've had a rather sizeable baby fund sitting unused for more than a year.  We figured we might as well use to get the baby.  We've looked at their prices through IVF and are okay with that if worse case situation arises.

And the best part if they had a cancellation and can see us tomorrow morning!  I hope that is a positive sign.

Yes, we need to catch up in the New Year!  Have fun with your guests!

  • As you may know, we went through NHS at first but are now doing private. The hard part with NHS is the pace. With private clinics it goes faster...per usual. I'm now trying to decide which clinic we want to go with. And how much we are willing to spend as its really really expensive to do the whole IVF thing. Best of luck!
