Hemming Jeans

Truly how hard is this? I have watched a couple youtube tutorials and it seems doable, but that can be misleading. I have never sewed clothing, mainly just made curtains that could have flaws unseen. If it matters the jeans are about 4 -6 inches to long.

Re: Hemming Jeans

  • I alter my dress pants all the time, but if I wanted jeans done I would take it to a professional. Denim is more difficult to sew and it's hard to get a hem that doesn't look like an alteration. Do you have an old pair that you don't care about that you can practice on and figure out if you're happy with the results?

  • I agree with pp. I have hemmed trouser style jeans a few time successfully but I haven't been happy with my results on regular old jean hems.

  • I followed this tutorial from Make-It and Love-It to hem jeans this summer and liked it:

  • There is a little plastic machine foot adapter that you can purchase at JoAnn's.  It is square and has a slot in it.  You slide it up near the needle when you get to the side seam.  It raises the foot so that it will go over the seam easily.

I sometimes cut the jean, serge or zigzag and fold it over once, to avoid all that bulk.  Looks the same.

  • Thank you for the feedback. I think I will take them to get hemmed and save trying this myself for a lighter material.
