s/o Christmas desserts but meal related
Does anyone sit down to a formal Christmas dinner? I was having this conversation with a coworker and they sit down to a formal dinner each year late in the afternoon and she couldn't believe my family has never done this. My mom normally just puts out a variety of easy-to-eat stuff and we fix plates throughout the afternoon.

Re: s/o Christmas desserts but meal related
Yes we do. Growing up we usually would do a formal dinner either on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, but not both. Now that DH and I are married, we go to my parents' house for a sit-down dinner on the Eve and to DH's parents' house for a sit-down dinner on the Day.

hmmm
We've never done a formal meal on Christmas Eve - but we've never had extended family around to celebrate with either - its always just been me, my sister and parents. Christmas Eve was always a clusterfuck of last minute wrapping, grocery shopping, shopping, etc.
We have always had a fancy meal on Christmas Day - normally a late afternoon Thanksgiving type meal - roast turkey, mashed potatoes, etc. My MIL does the same meal but hers is earlier - around 12 or 1 pm
This year, we are hosting Xmas day and I think we'll do an informal meal and then the day after Christmas, we're inviting ILs over and we'll do brunch then.

I never did until I met DH and started spending Christmas Day with his family. His mom does sit-down brunch and sit-down dinner.
We have a very large crowd at my parents on Christmas Eve so we do a buffet-type meal.
Wow so many of you or your DHs families do- one more reason my family is weird! Maybe because growing up there were so many of us that my mom never did it for space reasons...I'll have to ask!
LOL maybe. My mom takes christmas meals seriously - we always had big formal breakfast at the DR table with her holiday china and then a big christmas dinner. Her table sat 18 people though so we could squeeze a lot of people there and then at the kitchen table if necessary.

... every single day of forever.
We have done formal dinners in Christmas Eve all my life (growing up in Germany, the 24th is the "big" day for us)
Over the past few years I have been hosting x-mas eve parties at my house and since we usually have a lot of people come, too many to fit on the table, I now set up a buffet and people can sit or stand where they want.
We are still at the kids table too! We go to my Aunt's house on Xmas around 2:00 p.m. for 4:00 p.m dinner. We all sit down to eat but it's buffet style. Dessert follows a bit later after presents.
