Please help me brainstorm

The move is just around the corner. We just agreed that a friend is going to rent our place while we're gone, so I'm trying to do some general clean-up (although all furniture is staying). I am driving to my parents' house for Christmas this weekend and plan to take some stuff that's not coming with me, for safe keeping and for their trip to see us in March or April. (I won't see them again before we leave for good.) Here's what I've got:

For safe-keeping:

-jewelry I am not taking

- anything sentimental (DD's baby journal, etc.)

To bring me later:

- suitcase with some of our summer clothes and summer shoes

- fun, silly things DD loves from home, like the custom-made soaps from our local farmer's market

Is there anything obvious I'm missing?

  • Safe keeping:  copies of any important documents (passports, insurance info, lease w/ your tenants, official (raised seal, if your state does that) copies of your birth certificate(s) and marriage certificate).

If you have any nicer wines or liquors that need proper storage.

Yeah, nice priorities I've got, but seriously.

Ha! We've been drinking through all of that! That amazing bottle of port we thought we'd open when we finished grad school or bought our first home or had a child? Opened on a random Tuesday in October because "we're moving to France in a few months!" It was delicious.

Yes!  Nicely done :)!  Our xportation agreement allows us ship up to 500 bottles of wine back to the States.  Great.  Only problem is we can't seem to hold on to any long enough to ship back.  Hmmm Confused

Anyway, good luck with winding up and the move!

  • How do you store your digital photos. Do you keep them on your computer or on an external drive? Or are you one of the few who print them! It wouldn't hurt to go and get an extra external hard drive to back them up and leave at your parents.

  • You say that you are leaving all of your furniture for your tenants - but what about decorative pieces?

I have an absolutely beautiful glass rose that I am giving to my mother when I move to England because I know there is no way in hell that it's going to make it. If I was only going for a little while, though, I would give it to her to store for me. Anything that you really like decoration wise shouldn't stay in the apartment. Even though it's your friends renting, you wouldn't want to come back and find your prized blown glass candle holder has been smashed.

    Just a thought : )

We have a locked storage unit in our building's basement, so I think I will wrap things like this up and put them in boxes down there. I'm more likely to break them transporting them to my parents' house than down an elevator.

  • The only thing I can think of is the important paperwork, including financial statements.
