My sister has a birthday coming up next week and she's coming here to shampoo my carpets and scrub my floors, so I need to reimburse her kindly for that on top of the birthday. I'm already paying for her train ticket out here (she's home in Chicago for Christmas and I live much closer to her college, so it's helping her out) and I don't trust her with cash. DH and I got her a Nook for cleaning my house last time she was here.
She has a Walmart near her school, so I know she could use one of those. With all her trips, I'm guessing she could use a cute luggage set. My husband suggested a Best Buy card, but I know she'd have to get a ride there from campus since the bus doesn't go there.
Any thoughts?
Re: Gift ideas for a 19 year old
My brain is so tired today I hadn't even considered online shopping. They have a Starbucks in her town, so I could get her an awesome GC to go hang out there. What wannabe-trendy college student wouldn't want $100 for Starbucks?
I considered a large gift card for a pizza place or Subway, but she's actually reducing her meal plan next semester because she has way too much food. She was eyeing up my Vibrams like she was going to steal them last time she visited, so I could do a GC for a sporting good store.
Hell yeah. This is the smart sister who uses Plan B when things don't go as planned, so she'd probably be okay with condoms. Does Planned Parenthood have GCs? I should ask her how their university healthcare is.

Amazon gift card?
My college town only had a Wal-Mart and I hated going there. She could buy books for next semester on Amazon, too!
Possibly. http://www.coursesmart.com/ You'll have to find out if Nook works and whether the books she needs are available, but they're becoming more common.
Only to download into her laptop/ desktop, I think that its an App she can download. B&N doesnt have textbooks that are compatable for the Nook itself. However, if you got her a nook giftcard, you may be able to use it for that computer app to buy textbooks.
If that makes any sense at all.
This. I got a set from MIL the March before our wedding for my birthday. I love that thing so cute and its somewhat neutral in color so E doesn't mind hauling it around if he has too.
I like the gift card idea. Does CVS do gift cards? That might be good so she can pick up things like pads and contact lens solution if she wears contacts.
I agree on the luggage. By the time I got married (2 yrs after college) I had completely worn out a set of luggage. Seemed like college was full of travel opportunities of one sort or another.
GCs to Starbucks, WalMart etc would have been appreciated, but I can't even begin to tell you how awesome it would have been to have had help purchasing text books (be they virtual or paper). It's always a HUGE chunk of change that has to be paid all at once, often before financial aid gets straightened out for the semester. Other necessities (or luxuries like coffee) can be purchased in small amounts here and there. Just my two cents.
This is glorious. I hope they do it in my state. I want to get one for my kid sister.
I think lugage would be a great idea. They had several cute 5 piece sets at Target for around $50. I wouldn't get an expensive set for a 19 yr old college kid. It wouldn't be a big deal if these get jacked up, but they should last a few years.
I'd also get her a Target or Walmart GC. That way you know she'll have money for food, toilet paper and any thing else she may need (condoms).
You guys are so helpful!
I mapquested her nearest PP and it's an hour away, so I'll ask her about their university's healthcare and see if PP is something she needs. As of a few weeks ago, she has a new boyfriend, so I know annual exams & BC are necessities.
TX, I had no idea Target had such inexpensive luggage. My older sister got me a very basic set when I was 18 and although the large suitcase suffered major trauma from being thrown down conveyor belts, the small one is still serving me well as a carryon. Little sister is still using her high school volleyball duffle bag for traveling, so I know the luggage willl be much appreciated.
I'll make my way around town next week and pick up some GCs to various places, or I'll ask about her textbook situation. I bought my other sister's textbooks for freshman year too, so I know those get pricey. I bought her the train ticket and for some dumb reason, Amtrak makes you purchase a $20 student advantage card in order to get a student discount, so I bought her that since she'll be traveling by train at least a few more times over the next year.
I'm so excited to see her. We get along so much better now that she doesn't live with my mom full time. She's been home on winter break for less than a week and is already begging to leave.
Poor thing! I'm glad she is coming to spend time with you!
Your final ideas seem great!

This one? Or should I do something in a polka dot or more vibrant color?
It's a fairly classic look; you would know her style better than us. Personally, I'd go for a fun pattern or more vibrant color. But I'm wacky like that.
I asked her if she likes zebra print and she let out an exuberant YES! so it looks like that JCP set is a winner! Good find! She and I are so, so very different.
She said her university healthcare sucks and that she can't get to that PP by public transit, so she got her exam squared away this past week while she's home on break and she got a full year's supply of birth control!
ETA: The only zebra suitcase left is the carry-on size. Still searching! I've never had hard-sided luggage, so I wasn't sure about it.

Perfect! Purchased!
