Any advice? Toddler related

DS has to have a 48-72 hour EEG. We're going to try to do it at home first. It involves driving down to Aurora (from Firestone) to Children's Hospital and having them set it up. Then he will have all the electrodes on for 48-72 hours with the equipment in a little backpack that he will have to wear the whole time.

Indifferent

Is anyone else wondering how in the F this could possibly work? If he takes off any of the electrodes we're screwed since we can't put the back on ourselves. If we can't get it done at home he will have to go into the hospital for 3 days to do it so I really, really want to avoid that. Any tips? I feel like this is a hopeless endeavor.

  • Can you make sure he has some favorite pajamas that are long-sleeved and pants?  That might help prevent him from reaching for an electrode and pulling it off.

Also maybe have his favorite shows ready for him to view, and maybe get a few new toys to introduce throughout the 2-3 day period.

  • I'll be honest, I don't think I could do that for 3 days.  Are you planning on around the clock supervision?  This does not sound fun :(
  • I can put him in his favorite jammies but they won't keep him from pulling off the electrodes (they will be on his head). New toys sounds good. He doesn't like TV yet. Ugh. This sounds impossible.
  • Hmmm.

OK, while I loathe them, maybe get him one of those animal winter hats that are everywhere now:

or even tie a bandana around his head?

Yeah, I guess I'd go with that and the toys.  I'm sorry - it'll be challenging for sure!

  • did they wrap his head last time?

Maybe he'd forget about them a bit?

Any way they could wait until he's older?  We just did one with O this morning, and he was all excited about it b/c he got to stay up until midnight (a sleep deprived one, not a 24 hour one.)  It was leaps and BOUNDS easier than when he was 2!

Honestly, we kind of avoided it at that age because we knew it was going to be a nightmare. They did meds, they worked, and we left it at that.

  • What about a helmet?  You could let him decorate it with stickers to get him excited about it.  Obviously, he can't sleep in it, but it might work when he's awake.  Also, ask the staff, they should have some good tips.

  • They will wrap his head with gauze so no hats or helmets. They really want to figure out if what's going on are actually seizures so they said they don't want to wait.
