S/O: Computers and Backing up

What is your backup routine at home?

If you use an online site for backups, who do you use?

Re: S/O: Computers and Backing up

  • Following! My back-up hard drive died ages ago so I've fallen out of the habit of backing up. I'm sure there are better, more efficient ways now.

  • we have an external hard drive that we back up to once a month or so

  • We have a home server that backs up the laptops automatically each night through the wireless connection.

  • automated external hard drive backups. any really important docs are backed up to Dropbox.
  • If you are only backing up to an external drive at home you'll still lose everything in a fire or burglary. We used to use Mozy but ditched it now for crashplan.com
  • We use Carbonite on both laptops so that anything important will be safe if we have a fire or burglary.  I like that I don't have to think about back ups anymore.

  • I have 2 external hard drives, one to transfer older photos/files to, and one for time-machine (mac) backups.  Then, everything is backed up to Backblaze.

  • All of our photos are on an external hard drive. Any time I dump the memory card I put them on the hard drive as well. I wouldn't mind a second one just because I know from personal experience that they are not fool proof. I don't keep documents or anything else that needs to be backed up.
  • Also, we've talked about putting the second hard drive into a fire proof safe. Wont help if something happens tomorrow but the plan is to get a larger gun safe and have it bolted to the floor.
  • I have an external hard drive for personal stuff and another one for business stuff.  I also backup all of my important templates and portfolio on a flash drive.  In addition, I typically burn a copy of all original and edited files for each session to a dvd.

it would be worth your while to look into an online storage site for edited photos.  I used to burn everything as backup, but it's a lot easier and less "stuff" if you load them to a gallery/online storage site.  And they're always accessible.

My unedited files are kept in two separate physical places until edited/stored online (I copy images to the laptop and external hard drive at my office, and keep the memory cards with me at home).  Unless my home and office burn down at the same time, it's all good.

  • I use a external hard drive that I keep in a fireproof safe in our house.  I would like to do something online, so this post is helpful.

  • I'm thinking about going to Carbonite.

  • Just a heads up - Crashplan allows you to backup your data to another computer (encrypted) in another location (like your office or a friend's house) for free. They will also send you an external hard drive for your initial backups (so it doesn't take  forever) and overnight your data on an external drive for recovery. And their rates are crazy reasonable.
