Soda Stream

Does anyone have a Soda Stream?

My fianc? and I drink a fair amount of soda (me one a day, him maybe two), and soda in the UK is pretty expensive.  I also feel bad about the  packaging and waste, even though we recycle everything.

We're getting ready to register for wedding gifts while we're in the US, and I was thinking about registering for a SodaStream.  It looks like we could get the flavoring on Amazon.co.uk....

I guess I'm just looking for product reviews, if anyone can help:-)

Re: Soda Stream

  • I really, really, really want one! I've taken up the local habit of drinking lots of sparkling water, and I hate having to buy it at the grocery, since it's heavy to carry home and probably a bit of wasted money (beyond recycling, they actually reuse soda bottles here, so that's less of a concern).

I've used them at multiple friends' flats, and I love it. Everyone only has great things to say!  But also, no one around here uses the flavoring, so I have no idea what that's like. We just love having a huge home supply of bubbly water!

  • My parents have one and love love love it, they don't use the flavoring though, so no idea if that's any good.

Thinking of it, I bet you could just mix water with fruit juice and bubble that, that might be better than the chemical flavoring stuff??

  • We have one and it?s ok. I?m not absolutely in love with it for cokes, but the giner ale is ok, and I like having bubbly water to mix with my juice. My beef with Soda Stream is that in Germany at least, you are only allowed ONE CO2 cylinder at a time, so you can?t have a back-up for when yours is suddenly out of fizz. This irritates me to no end. The CO2 things are only sold with the machine and so you have to swap the used one for a new one...grrr. I tried, and hte lady at the store told me nope, no can do. And I even had an old one from a previous device which has been discontinued and she wouldn?t let me do it.

I think it voids the warranty if you put anything in it besides water. They claim it can gum up the works, but I don't know if that's true or if they just want you to buy more of their stuff.

  • We have a Soda Stream. My DH got it for Christmas two years ago. The Diet Cola is pretty good and we get the flavorings for less than $5 each at our local Woolworths. It is the only way I can afford my diet coke habit here - which now that my DH is coming home I am going to try to give up again. Picked that habit back up while he was in hospital.

You put the bubbles in the water - you would add the fruit juice to the water after you put the bubbles in. You never want to use it with anything but water, but you can add anything you want to the water after it is bubbled. People here often use it with cordial.

    Random poster popping in.

If you add anything to it before carbonating it it explodes. My H tried it with grape juice and it was everywhere. Adding juice afterward is delicious.
