would you make pedi appt?

DDs left eye is still very much crossed... her right eye seems to follow more and moves better but at times I think that one crosses too. I've heard and read varying things about when you should be concerned about that. She is 3 months today and from some places, I've heard you start getting concerned at 3 months... others 4 months... others not til 6 months.

I called the pedi and they basically left it up to me-- I could bring her in to get evaluated or we could wait til her wellbaby appt next month. I think I'm leaning towards making an appt but DH thinks we could wait another month. My mom thinks it's more pronounced than it was a few weeks ago. What would you do?

It was very much pronounced in this picture below.

Re: would you make pedi appt?

  • I work in a Pedi office.  And I would say that it is truly up to you.  If it cannot wait until her well baby and you are stressing yourself out with it, then make the appointment.  Do you think it is bothering her?  If not, it is something that can be addresses at the next visit.

There is also no sense in making two co-pays!

  • The nice thing is we don't have copays for well-baby appts, just sick visits... so I'm not worried about that. I'm just thinking it could impact her development since she isn't really using that eye.
  • I agree that it's up to you and you could wait, but if it were me I would probably make an appointment just to get more information and relive my own stress about it.

  • I agree it is up to you. I will tell you that my Christian was semi cross eyed for a while, and by 6 months it fully worked itself out.  I just wanted to throw that out there.

  • Thanks ladies! I try not to worry about things but then my mother gets all worked up and wants her to go immediately to Mass Eye & Ear (over-reactive much?!?). I might just bring her in to see if there is anything they suggest but as I've heard (and you've seen katzblaze), it can work itself out and be fine in a few months.
  • Caroline's eyes weren't crossed, but one went in a litttle more than normal sometime this Summer. I spoke to my Dr at her wellbaby and he said that with the whole exam etc. he can't ever get a true look at their eyes and referred me to a Ped eye doctor (who turned out to be my Dr too!) There, they could dilate her eyes and do a thorough eye exam. They didn't need a referral either, so if I really wanted to get her checked out I'd probably just see an eye dr. DD's worked itself out too. Oh, and if you do go to an eye dr. ask to see if they do the free program. Most eye Dr's do a free exam up to 1 year for children because they are trying to do studies and get parents into the routine of getting their children's eyes checked. My Dr said 9 months is the best since they sit still really well, but aren't old enough to run :P
  • I took Jack in for a droopy lid and I think he was about 6 months.  He saw his regular doc and then she referred him to a ped eye doctor... who I didn't like but diagnosed him with astigmatism and now he sees our doc every 6 months.

  • I would personally make the appointment, otherwise I'd over analyze everything and make myself crazy.

  • Just wanted to add that I'm not sure where in MA you live, but a really good friend of mine & DH's is a pediatric ophthalmologist and he works out of Waltham or Lexington I think.  Let me know if you want his info and I'd be happy to send it.
