Anyone have geothermal in their home?

As soon as we sell our house, we are planning to begin construction on our new home. We have a friend who is in heating and cooling and he strongly suggests geothermal for heating and cooling. Although the cost is higher initially, he said the monthly savings on your energy bill is generally more than the increase in your mortgage for having it put in during construction. I know there are some nesties that have built homes recently. Does anyone have opinions on this? Thanks!

Re: Anyone have geothermal in their home?

  • We have one. LOVE it!

With the current rebates, etc. it comes out to almost the same as a regular HVAC system, so it's very worth it.

We have very low heating/cooling bills and you also get a lower rate from Mid American on all of your electricity.

We interviewed several companies and ended up going with City Wide Heating and cooling. The guy from CityWide has been absolutely amazing to work with.  We have 4 zones so that we can tailor our heating and they really worked with us to nail down the right size unit for our house and how the zones needed to be set up to be most efficient.

One thing to note is that they're slightly larger than a regular furnace, so you'll need a bit more space in your utility area.

  • We built our home last year and LOVE the geothermal.  It's more expensive, but we got a TON back at tax time- it was a huge write off.  We also decided to go all electric with Mid America b/c of the geothermal and have had huge discounts on our montly bill.  We built a 1700 sq foot ranch with a walk out basement (another about 1700 sq feet) and have yet to have a heating or cooling bill about 125 for the month.  There really was no need for us to have gas with that kind of discount...  We chose to make it fit into our budget and "downgrade" sort of speak in other areas b/c it's so worth it in the long run!  Agreed on the other post though, you're utility room definitely has to be bigger to accomodate everything coming in and out of the house.  The only bad thing, I guess, is that we've had to really figure out where to buy the filters for it- our size filters aren't available at Home Depot/Menards, etc....

  • We put two regular size filters together with duct tape. That's what our guy said to do.  :)

  • Thanks ladies. I appreciate that feedback. It makes total sense if we can just swing that initial higher price for the house. Sounds like it will pay off long term though!
  • We are in the home stretch of building a home and we put geo thermal in. For us, we would have needed two units for regular heating/cooling but one for geothermal.

With the tax rebate the cost is almost equal for us. Yes, initially we pay more but we will get some money back + what we save monthly.

Also, on appraisal ... we receive a 10K credit over homes that do not have geothermal. Depending on where you build and what type of home you are building that 10K bump over comps in your area could help if you lose in other areas on your appraisal.

It's great for resale as well (not that you ever want to think about that when building a new home but you never know where life takes you)
