XP: President's Day Weekend Getaway

I posted this on travel, but thought I'd try over here even though this board seems to be pretty dead  Sad

DH and I always do a trip the weekend of President's Day in place of getting each other Valentine's Day presents.  We always know where we want to go, but this year we are at a loss.  We would leave sometime Friday evening and want to be home sometime Monday evening.  We live in Central PA and would like to go somewhere within 4 hours (by car or plane) and we'd like to keep it under $1000 for the trip.  We are looking for something relaxing and romantic, but also with some fun things to do.  Any suggestions? (Also if I am being too vague let me know, but we are pretty open minded for anything)

Re: XP: President's Day Weekend Getaway

  • With that budget and trying to keep the travel under 4 hours, I'd probably plan on going by car.  You can look on expedia and see if you happen to see a fabulous flight anywhere but you may end up getting to more than 4 hours since you're not near a major airport by the time you end up driving and then deal with flying.

Niagra Falls, Pittsburgh, NYC, Philly, Baltimore, Washington DC, Poconos or 7 Springs if you like skiing

  • Have you ever been to Berkley Springs, WV? DH proposed to me there in a cabin he had rented for the weekend. It is a cute town. If you go, I suggest eating at Panaroma on the Peak. The had excellent food and had a view that was beautiful.

  • Berkley Springs sounds like it could be a good option and it's pretty close to us (about 2.5 hours).....what are some of the things you did there?  Any recommendations for lodging?

  • We visited the little shops. Went on a day trip to a historic house, but I don't remember the name. We stayed at Coolfont Resort, but they are no longer open. The Berkley Springs Hotel was beautiful, but I am not sure if they are open.

  • Id agree that going by car would be best for your budget and timeline. Berkley Springs has been suggested to me many times by a coworker who does a lot of work there...its a little town so its great for just a couple days. Another option not mentioned is the Baltimore/St Michaels area or maybe somewhere in the Shendendoah mtns. My uncle has a place in Massanutten (VA) and its a great place for skiing, hiking, golfing,  indoor water park, massages and all that stuff resorts typically have.
