Keira's crazy birth story (really long)

While I have a few minutes I figured I would jump on and tell her story.

Sunday morning I went over to my sisters house to bake cookies which we do every year the weekend of or before my mom's birthday.  I figured I should get it done before they make an appointment for my induction.  But anyway, so we bake all day and throughout the day I had slight contractions but nothing that was getting stronger or worth counting so I just kept baking.  We finally get done baking around 5-5:30 and we divide up the cookies and I go home.

So I get home and throughout dinner I am still feeling contractions here and there.  This is about 6:00.  So I start to check the clock whenever I felt the contractions cause I wanted to time them just in case. Again, nothing worth counting.

All of a sudden around 6:45 I started to feel contractions again.  So there I went and started to time them.  This time they started to come every 5 minutes.  At first they weren't bad, but then as each one passed they got worse.  I walked around for awhile and then sat down and laid down to make sure they weren't false labor, and when they wouldn't go away I decided that I wasn't going to wait an hour I was calling the doctor. So I called the answering service and if I could have I would have strangled the lady on the other end.  I was telling her that I was having bad contractions every five minutes and needed the doctor on call to call me back asap. So she takes her damn time and is telling me she isn't sure which dr to call and going on and on (by this time it is 7:15) and I was like, JUST CALL THE DR THAT IS ON CALL FOR POCONO OB/GYN!  So finally she says she will page Dr. Niki and tell him that I am having contractions.  Now I am waiting for the dr to call back all the while crying at every contraction I get.  They were awful by this point.

The dr. calls me back around 7:30 and tells me to come in. So we grab everything and run for the car.  I said goodnight to Dylan and told him I would be back soon.  Before I even get in the car I have another contraction that stops me in my tracks and drops me to my knees.  I tell RC we need to get there fast.  So we go and the whole time in the car my contractions are just awful.  RC is driving like a maniac and between the pain and that I was yelling at him (poor guy).  We finally arrive at the hospital and I get up to labor and dellivery at 8:00.  I go in to get changed and go to the bathroom and I can barely get off the toilet because the contractions were so bad.  When I finally get  to the bed, the dr checks me and says, "you are fully dilated, I'm sorry I can't give you anything for pain". I probably could have murdered him at that point, I start crying out of fear and pain.  Then the dr says that he has to go do an emergency c-section and he will be back soon and to try to breathe through the contractions.  I wanted to punch someone, I just wanted her out.  So he goes off and the nurse wheels me over to the birthing room in the bed because I told her I didn't want to walk because everything hurt so bad.

So I get over to the birthing room across the hall at 8:25 and they keep me in that bed.  Meanwhile, all this time I am seriously screaming in pain.  Like if a first time mom came up to deliver her baby she would probably want to run out of there, thats how bad I was.  So they are trying to get an IV in while I wiggle around in pain and scream.  They finally get the IV in and the dr checks me once more and tells me she is still a little high and I have a little bit of lip left to go before I should start pushing so he runs out to do the c-section.  As soon as he walks out the door I tell the nurses that I need to push and my body just starts pushing.  I feel her crowning (probably around 8:35 or so, I lost track of time by this point), and they are trying to get me to breathe through it so that the dr has time to get back.  Well that wasn't happening, I just couldn't stop pushing so the one nurse runs down the hall to get the dr.  The dr gets there, I push once, feel the ring of fire and scream, and then another push and she was out at 8:43.  The dr then has me push out the placenta and gives me one stitch and says he will be back.  He had to still do the c-section.  It was a crazy night, but in the end we were both ok and that is all that mattered.

Poor RC was kind of shoved out of the way and I didn't even know where he was during the birth but I knew he was in the room somewhere.  And the poor guy was crying because he saw me in so much pain.  The funny part was that as soon as Keira was out, I said, "That wasn't that bad".  The next day when the dr came to check on me he said, "So, people would pay to have babies that quick!". I told him I just was glad it was over.  I give props to all you ladies who went without drugs.  I wouldn't want to do it again.

Re: Keira's crazy birth story (really long)

  • what a story!  My mom's second labor was very very similar (minus it started with her water breaking - but was still about 90 minutes from that to delivery!)  Even with my labor (which was about 9-10 hours of active labor, but I went from 2-10cm in about 5 hours), my OB told me that I'll have to get to the hospital ASAP next time around!  I can't even imagine what it might be like for you if you have another!

    Congrats again!

  • Wow! Congrats again, Erin!

Maybe a stupid question, but why an IV if you weren't receiving any pain medication?

around 36 weeks you are tested for a bacteria called "group B strep." If it comes back positive, you need antibiotics pushed during labor. Sometimes you just need fluids pushed, other times you may still need the help of Pitocin, and you also want an IV in place if you have complications (like hemorrhaging) and need other meds.

Congrats Erin, you did an amazing job during a crazy stressful labor!

Jules covered the bases, and some hospitals require it. You can shop around if you want to be cord-free (the one where the twins were delivered required a IV to be placed, but we let it go since we knew it would be a C since they were breech). Most hospitals where midwives have privileges give you more leeway (and things like pit can be given without the IV in an emergency).

Interesting! I did not know about the group B strep. The whole birthing thing is fascinating. I'm lucky I have all you to explain it to me.

I learned so much from the boards too!  I love talking about pregnancy and the birthing process so keep on asking! :)
