Re: I still have no idea what to get my parents for Xmas

  • I am in the same boat with my inlaws.  I think we're just going with a gift card.  I asked for ideas and they didn't give me any.
  • Thanks to tmm140 I've decided to get my ILs a Keurig.  I'm pretty pumped.

  • My parents are usually impossible to buy for. My Mom buys everything she wants/needs and my Dad doesn't have hobbies and lives with my sister, so he has very little space for "stuff".

But this year was easy. Mom gave me tons of ideas over the past couple of months so it was easy to pick a couple of things for my sisters and I to go in on: an expensive Pandora bead and a jewelry box. I have ideas leftover that I can tap into for her birthday in April.

My Dad asked for some pants, so I got those, and we picked up a large collage frame that I'm going to put prints of the grandkids into - he can then hang it on his bedroom wall where he has some other photos already hung.

My fall-back is always kid-related gifts. Last year my Mom got a photobook of pictures of Mia, especially pictures that were Mom and Mia, and she absolutely loved it.

  • Me either. Ib hoping my brother got them something I can go in halfsies on. That is horrible but I have no ideas and have run out of time.
  • ugh, I still have to get my mom something. luckily she is easy. she is happy with wine, candles, fluffy socks etc.

  • Join the club. My dad is the most difficult person to shop for. He has zero hobbies - he reads library books and watches tv. He doesn't like buying books/DVDs, doesn't listen to music other than the car radio, doesn't like going out to eat, lives in polos and jeans (he has plenty of both). Hell, he won't even use the cellphone we bought him three years ago. We don't have kids so that doesn't help.

He finally told me one book he wanted but it only cost me $10. I ended up buying a gift card to Shell gas station since they do so much driving. Mom is always easy. We found a case of her favorite (discontinued) candles on eBay. Paired with an iTunes gift card. ILs are getting a restaurant gift card.

  • We got my ILs a blu-ray player (for their whole family - the parents and H's two younger siblings.) I'm over trying to buy individual gifts lol.

I got my dad a new frying pan for bacon.  I wish I was kidding, but I'm not.  My mom said he's been asking for one. My parents are so weird.

  • Anything kitchen related?  One of my mom's gifts is a waffle iron (she requested) and we got my ILs a keurig (sp?) as a joint gift.  I got my stepfather an electric throw blanket.  And of course a sweater for my mom and H's mom, lol.  Good hand cream is one of my fall-back female gifts if I need to get something small for someone.  What else... restaurant gift cards, scarves/gloves, PJs, jewelry... those are also fall-backs that I've used in the past.  Good luck!

  • I always have to bug my Dad for books that he wants and things like that. He is so picky and he's the kind of person who will fake like he likes something and then a week later you'll find it balled up in the basement.
  • My IL's are also really hard to shop for (very few hobbies, and they tend to buy things for themselves) so we usually give them food.  Spiced nuts, fancy frozen appetizer type stuff, jam, our homemade sausage.  The kinds of stuff you'd find in a Harry & David basket, but homemade.

In the past year though they've picked up kayaking, and there was a groupon/living social deal for a kayak tour of annapolis, so we got them that this year.  I think they'll actually use it.  Especially if we go with them.  (we got ourselves the groupon too)

  • The standards for my parents are clothes, jewelry, and books. I will also sometimes go for decorative bowls, pitchers, etc for my mom or some kind of entertaining serveware (appetizer plates, etc).

DH shops for ILs and he gets them a bunch of randomness. I'm glad he handles his parents and I handle mine!

  • They have soooo much clutter in their house, I hate to add to it w/ unnecessary household/decorative items - b/c they wont' throw anything away.  My sister got them a keurig last year, so now they have the keurig plus their 2 other older coffee makers sitting on the counter, next to the canister of dog treats, for the dogs that's been dead for 6 months.  Its that kind of kitchen. ...

I think I'm just going to get my Dad some chocolates and liquor and probably give my mom a new framed pic of DD and a new winter scarf and gloves.  Maybe I'll get her a GC to her nail place too.

  • I got my mom a Jacket, a new camera, a book she wanted and made a photo album of LO's past year.

My dad (who I usually splurge on) got a Ravens jersey and a Gas Gift card this year from me.

He has also just begun collecting bobble heads.  I found a site online that will make custom bobble heads of whoever you want.  Idea for the future....

Maybe you should go full on passive-aggressive and get them a GC for a consult with a professional home organizer/declutterer.

And then secretely film their response when they open the present...

    that'd be fun!

    for us.

But for reall though...those ideas sound nice.  Not super exciting, but they're grownups.  gifts aren't usually that exicitng anymore when you're not 12 years old and it's not the new bike you've been dreaming of all year.

Everybody loves chocolate and booze.  And most grandparents always love a nice new picture of the kids, and I know I need new gloves every year since I always lose at least one of last years over the summer.

    That's was DH's suggestion - LOL

I decided to pass on that!

and now you know why we're not going to their house for Xmas anymore!!  They have to move the dog blankets around on the sofas for us all to sit (did I mentioned the ONE 7lbs dog passed away 6 months ago).

They have 4 grills on the deck too.

LOL at Hoarders on DVD!  They'd lose it amid the Macy's and Penny's One Day Sale flyers from 2009.
