So some of you may remember the problems I was having with our HOA. I'm starting to regret not sending the letter I wrote out when I first started having these problems. For those who don't, a quick recap, they've sent me letters saying I should have contacted them before bringing my daughter into the home. Yeah, stupid I know. We also keep getting letters about things that aren't in the agreement, so I don't know why they are complaining!
Well sure enough, we've been getting letters every few days complaining about our colored lights, even though there's nothing in the contract about not allowing colored lights. I've just been saving them with all the other complaints that are not part of the agreement. Well my across the street neighbor and I were talking yesterday and he told me something that just floored me.
He has a menorah in the window and received a letter saying that it was distasteful and needed to be removed. I'm sorry, what? You can't tell someone their religion is distasteful! I think the guy who has 9 big inflatable things on his tiny front yard, is distasteful but I'm not going to tell him that! Now I've had my suspicions for a while now that this just could be some rogue HOA member (And really how sad is that) but that is beyond out of control. So I called the president of the HOA, and told her what was going on, and she told me that it probably wasn't as big a deal as I was making it, and up hung. Nice, thanks for the brush off.
Now, my neighbor actually had their lawyer draft a letter for them and sent it to the president, but I doubt anything other than a meaningless apology will happen. Even if it is just a rogue member, they aren't doing anything about it, and the president even seems to be covering for them. I wonder how she's going to handle it if my neighbors lawyer calls. She can try to brush them off, but it won't turn out well for her.
If they want to do something to keep themselves busy, maybe they could look into the idiot who throws parties at 2 am, breaking all sorts of noise ordinances and has their friends park in other people's spots. Or the people who let their dogs free roam even though we have a leash law. Better yet, maybe they could look into a better lawn care company since the one they use is completely incompetent. Seems like any of those might be a better use of their time.
I cannot wait until we move out of this place.
Re: Yes the HOA gets even more ridiculous....Kinda long

He should call the ACLU.
That is fuucked UP.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
If your neighbor is willing, I think the two of your should contact the media. The menorah letter really raises the level on this (the stuff they did to you is AWFUL but this is blatant discrimination). I never tell people to contact the media because I'm a journalist and I know most of the time I wouldn't give a flying fuuck when other people are screaming "Call the media!" but I'd write this story in a heartbeat.
Hopefully though the letter from his lawyer will get them to cut this sh-t out. That's just absurd.

We miss you and love you always, little firecrackers!
I really feel for you. We had so many problems with our condo association, just like you did. It got so intolerable that DH and I actually moved out recently, into a rental, and put our condo up for sale. Those associations can make your life miserable in so many ways.
I'd be curious to know where you live to see if it is in our area, too. Or maybe this is just a common thing with these organizations.

Agreed! That type of letter is crossing the line. I would be calling the ACLU, the local Jewish Federation as well as the local new & radio stations.
Totally do this. Ridiculous.
