birthday party invitation wording

G's birthday party is in mid-January. While I appreciate all of the people that shower my kids with gifts, with his birthday being right after Christmas we are overrun with toys and clothes and stuff.

If people feel compelled to bring something to the party, I would prefer it to be non-perishable food items that we can donate to a local food bank. I think this could be a great lesson for G and help people that need it more than we do. How do I word the invitation without being tacky and presumptuous?

Re: birthday party invitation wording

  • I have done this for every birthday party we've had for Charlotte with great success (I honestly think most people are relieved not to have to come up with a gift!).  Char's birthday is in February so although it's two months after Christmas, I still feel like it's near enough so that she doesn't need a lot of toys.

Jax had a WONDERFUL way to word it on Char's 2nd or 3rd birthday, so maybe she can chime in, but I always say something like:

"In lieu of gifts, please consider bringing a donation from the list below to benefit XYZ charity.  We are grateful for anything that you can do for this organization!"

Just tweak to fit the food bank criteria (maybe you can find a list of specific items they're in need of?).

And usually, I explain my connection to the organization/why I chose that charity to help that particular year.  We've done the YMCA, Boys and Girls Country, and Little Footprints (the first two are orgs my dad was very heavily involved in when he was alive, and the third was through our church).  Not sure what I'm going to do this year....the food bank is a wonderful idea!

I doubt anyone will think it's presumptuous; I think it's an amazing thing to do and I will continue to do it every year with Charlotte's birthdays (at least to some extent).

  • Rayskit has done this saying that they wanted non-perishable food items.  I can't remember the wording...maybe email her.
