I'm going to FL for a work trip next month. Originally DH was going to go, but he's most likely starting a new job right after the New Year (so happy - he's been out of work since July). I'm taking Madeline with me because my dad lives down there and they don't get to see her that often.
Work pays for my ticket and we were going to use miles for DH's ticket. Since I'd already planned on using the miles and the flights are really full, I'm thinking of just using them for Madeline. If both of us were traveling I wouldn't be concerned about having a seat for her, but since it's just me and she's ridiculously squirmy at this point, I'm thinking it'd be better to get her a seat of her own.
Is this silly? We don't have tons of miles but since we won't be traveling at all next year I have this feeling the miles will be well spent. Plus, it's almost 5 hours of combined air time.
Re: Flying alone with toddler - WWYD
New Mexico to Florida is a long flight holding a squirmy baby. I would probably suck it up and buy the extra ticket.
As a FYI - I was looking on Delta's site last night and some airfares offer 1/2 price or reduced fare tickets for children under 5 flying with a parent. I would check into the cost first before deciding to cash in miles. But still, I would get her a ticket.
Thanks. I think so too. Just having trouble pulling the trigger on the ticket.
I looked at Delta and the flight times are awful - like leave at 6 a.m. get there at 6 p.m. kind of awful.
I would get the extra seat - even if she sits still on your lap the whole time (haha) it will still be nice to have the extra arm/leg/stuff room. Kids have so much stuff!
BTW, that picture in your siggy is adorable!
I think that kind of thing is money well spent.
ETA: Will you bring her carseat onboard or just use a CARES harness (or just hold her during take-off and landing since she's young enough? I can't imagine Jane would ever sit in her carseat on the plane but if I brought it and it took up the entire seat I'd be stuck. Can they sit in a seat with nothing during the flight?
Thanks everyone. I'm going to do it. The thought of trying to be shoved into one seat makes me cringe. Plus with this baby belly I don't have that much lap room in airplane terms :-)
And thanks for the compliment on the pic. That's how she was sleeping one day last week when I got home from work. Thankfully the camera was close by.
I would call whatever airline you plan on flying because I've heard about half price or discounted fares on other airlines as well (e.g., American), but I can't find it on their website.
Southwest's website shows discounted fares if that is an option: http://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/family/children-pol.html
