Why the heck are religions advertising?

(spurred by the Mormon missionaries that came to my door today with Mormon.org business cards)

I've seen all the Mormon commercials and billboards, and now tonight I saw a commercial for Catholicism.

It just seems so... bizarre.

Re: Why the heck are religions advertising?

  • I thought the Mormon thing was related to Mitt Romney.  The Catholic advertisements just started.  So strange.
  • Mitt didn't personally sanction the Mormon church to do it, but they did start their campaign to help the idiots who are holding his religion against him understand he's not the devil.

  • Well, I personally feel like I will pick a religion based on what a commercial tells me.  I'm pretty sure it's the best way to make a decision.
  • Methodist have done it too - Open hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors

    ::shrug::

You have to reach a new base somehow, and people aren't going to churches anymore. I can see why they're resorting to advertising.

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • I don't remember the Methodist commercials, but that doesn't mean much with my memory these days.  The Mormon ones seem to air several at a time.

    This...definitely!  ha ha!

  • It is really bizarre!  I feel strange every time I see one, it just seems like the wrong way of recruiting new members.

This!  The Mormon church has lots of money & I'm sure they would love to see Romney elected, so my understanding is that they are running the commercials to get people to start talking more openly about Mormonism so it doesn't remain such a mystery & on the flipside it is "helping" Romney's campaign but its not "directly related" to his finances, etc.

no identifiable siggy pictures anymore, thanks a lot stupid nest!

Huh, my church does not have this issue at all!  They just added an additional regular mass on Sundays because we are beyond our capacity!  If you do not get to church at least 10 minutes early you do not have a seat! I guess we are the exception.

  • While my church is not lacking for membership and still has tons of attendees, and we don't generally as a denomination advertise to recruit, religions have been advertising for decades.

Anyone remember all the commercials for Latter Day Saints that never mentioned the work mormon? (Not that I blame them)

Right now you have a whole host of protestant churches who want to scream from the roof tops WE ARE NORMAL!

  • I figured it was just a Tim Tebow thing.
  • I heard a thing (on NPR I think) a while back that said that initially it was to counter the South Park guys new play that makes fun of mormons but then as Romney got more interested in running and was facing opposition based on his religion, they decided to continue and expand the campaign.

  • Mormons have been advertising as long as I can remember.

  • A little off-topic, but did anyone see the SNL skit with Tim Tebow and Jesus...according to Jesus all the Morman stuff is totally true.  Wink
