Japan & Thailand (or any where!)

So ... we're looking to do a double-graduation trip. I want to do 15 days in 'asia' meaning 10 days in thailand or vietnam or malaysia (although we've already been to kuala lumpar) or Hong Kong or Singapore or somewhere, coupled with a 5ish day stint in Japan (we lived there for a couple of years and just want to revisit old haunts).

Ideally, we'd like to do a' stop-over' somewhere to minimize costs but I can't get this online or even from the couple of travel agents that I contacted (I don't have a 'trusted agent'). I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... any suggestions?

Re: Japan & Thailand (or any where!)

  • I know Sinagpore Airlines does stopover specials ocasionally but they are usually for a limited number of days.

We love SE Asia, personally I would choose HCM City in Vietnam, travelling along the Mekong to Phnom Penh and then on to Siam Reap. We did a trip similar to this in 2008 and loved it

    Singaope

    Cambodia

    Vietnam

    Hong Kong

    Thailand

  • I highly recommend Laos, Luang Prabang in particular. It was an amazing place. We really liked Siem Reap as well. We have done a stop over for 2 days in Singapore on Singapore Air before.

  • You should look at Cathy Pacific's All Asia Pass.
  • I just got back from 16 days between Vietnam and Siem Reap and didn't get to see everything i'd like in Vietnam. It's an amazingly beautiful place and I'd go there again in a heartbeat.
  • I have always wanted to go to Phueket, Thailand! Will you be going there? The beaches in Thailand look amazing!
  • We did a Seattle to Tokyo 4 day trip, then flew to Bangkok and we used BKK as a main "hub" of sorts.

In Tokyo, we just, (duh) stayed in Tokyo.

In Bangkok, we did Bangkok for a few days (well, I was there for 2.5 weeks for work, but my husband joined me after the conference), then we flew to Phuket.  Phuket was our "hub" again, we literally just got the cheapest rooms we could find (in a Best Western, for like $20 a night) so we could leave our bags and go to Khao Sok to a "luxury camping" i.e. camping where tents are large enough to be rooms.  It was like camp, actually, since there were activities, but at night we all congregated in a tented "hall" and ate, cooked etc.

Then we went to Ko Phi Phi for relaxation (for a few days).

To be honest, I wish we would have gone to Chiang Mai.  Or just north.  I wasn't particularly fond of Phuket (at least what we saw), and Ko Phi Phi, while pretty, was just another tropical island for me (I'm from the Caribbean, so I am used to really pretty beaches!).
