TPJ update

Thank you all for your help and support.  I might DD later, but for now, here's what we know.

So, DH had open heart surgery in January to replace a valve that was removed when he was an infant. There were some complications, but eventually, the surgery was deemed a success. DH has always been active and a competitive athlete and has been working as a career firefighter for the last 9 years.  After the surgery, he feels even better and wants to run a marathon.

After being back to work, he almost passed out at work.  He ended up going to the hospital because of his history.  They transferred him to University to see his congenital heart specialist.  They did an electrophysiology study and were able to put in a rare arrhythmia.  Because of that, they determined he needed a defibrillator implanted "just in case."  This was so much harder both physically and mentally than the original surgery.  It didn't help that it was DD's 2nd birthday and he spent it in the hospital wondering if he was going to get shocked and then wondering if he was going to have a job.

So, they allowed him to go back to work, but he wasn't allowed to drive any department vehicle.  He went back for his 6 month check up where the doctors had all said if he hadn't had any problems, they would release him to full duty.  He went in, they interrogated the device and found that he had one episode of non-sustained VTach that converted on it's own (he didn't get shocked).  So, now the docs were not in agreement about what to do.

Well, the entire cardiology department at University met about his case last week and he got their recommendation yesterday.  They will not sign off to allow him to drive emergent (lights and siren).  He can still drive his own vehicle and drive in a routine manner, but not act in full capacity as a driver/operator (which is his current position).  So, today DH met with all the "brass."  He got pretty good news:  he has a job until he chooses to leave/retire.  He has been extremely active in projects, etc. which has made a good impression on the powers that be.  They are actually sending him to a few conferences next year so he can look at promoting to an officer position.  The bad news, he'll probably lose his promotion and pay that goes with being a driver/operator. They still want him to train new driver/operators and test other departments' driver/operators, though, so he's going to argue that he should keep his pay.  Also, hopefully without tens of thousands of medical bills this next year, it will seem like a pay raise, not a cut.

So, basically, Nestie power worked again!  Now, after reading the cardiology report, though, I'm nervous about his heart, which is not a good feeling.  Anyway, thank you, again for the undying power of the CO Nasties!

  • P-I'm sorry about all the stress this has had you and your dh under.  It sounds like they came up with some good news and while there will always be an underlying feeling for you of the health of his heart you are in a business where sudden things happen to people daily that they aren't expecting and so you are most aware of this.  It's great that he is healthy for the most part and that his job is intact.  Big hugs and best wishes with him keeping his income stablized.

  • You guys have been through so much this year. I'm glad that everything seems to be working out. I hope he gets to keep his pay. It sounds like he deserves it if he's going to be training/testing new drivers.
