We just got a water softener installed. The guy that sold it to us said we only need to use 1/2 the amount of soap, detergent, etc now when washing clothes/dishes/ourselves, etc.
Do you find this true or not? I know he was trying to sell it to us and was trying to show how we'd save money. Just wondering if we really can half it, or if find that not to be true?

Re: Water Softener/Soap
We've had our softener at least 5 years now, so I don't really remember if we made any real changes to our soap use. We don't use much soap in the washer. We have a frontloader and I use just under the lowest line in the cap of Tide and everything comes out fine. I quit using fabric softener when I started washing up all the baby clothes before Nicholas was born and discovered I didn't notice any difference. We use gel pacs in the dishwasher, so not sure if there would be a difference there or not. We almost never see water spots on the dishes. (I have one set of plates that seems to like to spot and really that's it).
You will notice at first that it feels like your soap didn't rinse off when you shower, wash your hands, etc. It took a little getting used to, but now I don't even think about it.
