San Diego

My Dh & I are going to be booking a trip to San Diego in the next couple of months. Were planning on going in September of 2012. Besides the zoo what are some other "must do's" while we are there. Neither of us have ever been to California.

Re: San Diego

  • It really depends on what you're into. The greater SD metro area has a ton to offer, from beaches to mountains, from food to wine, from sightseeing to museums.

  • September is near perfect beach weather.  The water is still summer-warm, the grey skies of spring and summer have passed, and the rain hasn't (usually) set in yet.  Definitely make the most of your beach time!  My favorite San Diego beach is Silver Strand in Coronado, and the island itself is great fun to walk/bike around with the gorgeous Hotel Del, a great Main Street (Orange Ave.) and a fun mini-marina.

My favorite San Diego attraction is Balboa Park.  It's filled with museums, trails, gardens, fountains, and it's where you'll find the zoo.  There's also a great local artist enclave (Spanish Village).

If you're into animals, there are several venues other than the zoo to take advantage of: Sea World, The Safari Park (formally Wild Animal Park) and Birch Aquarium.

I adore Cabrillo Naitonal Monument.  It's so beautiful up there and gives a great view of San Diego.  September's not great for whale watching, but there's always the lighthouse and a nice shoreline hike.

Old Town San Diego is fun and an easy/quick activity.

Little Italy is especially fun over the weekend with the Saturday Mercado.

Temecula, which is home to a majority of our wineries, is just a short drive away (DH and I are actually heading out there next week to pick up some wine from our club)  Some wineries can also be found in Carlsbad, Escondido, and Rancho Bernardo.  If you do plan on going to the Safari Park there's a winery just across the way (Orfila).

If beer is more your thing, San Diego has a fabulous reputation for craft beer.  We have something like 30 microbreweries and almost all have tasting rooms and fun events.  (Although if you prefer not driving all over the county there's a fabulous place in Little Italy that showcases many fabulous brews).

Another great daytrip in September is to Julian, for gold mining and apple pie.  It's got a very "wild west" feeling to it.

If you enjoy shopping, there are outlets in both North and South San Diego County.

The botanical garden is gorgeous.  We finally got around to visiting last weekend and I'm definitely thinking of becoming a member.

  • I love San Diego area - wish we were there now! I would skip the zoo and do the Wild Animal Park "WAP" (Safari Park now I guess). The zoo just depressed me how cramped they all were. They do rotate some animals with the WAP so they say they get to stretch their legs.

I second Balboa Park and recommend the marina - walk on tours on ships.

  • Whenever I go to San Diego I love going to Old Town San Diego. The mexican food there is amazing.
  • This is great!! Thanks, I will be looking into some of these places.
