Is my air purifier safe?

We live in an older house and I have two dogs, No matter how much I clean I can't get rid of the dirty/musty smell. I recently got an air purifier and after some research I found out it emits ozone. I know a lot of people use these and I just want to know if it's safe. I'm 24 weeks pregnant now.

Re: Is my air purifier safe?

  • I have heard of a lot of people getting headaches from ozone.  My brother lived in a rented house where the basement flooded and caused a ton of mold.  They had to do an ozone bomb to get rid of it.  My brother tried to leave the key for the man to lock up, and he told him, "if your house is going to get robbed, now is the best time because you will find them dead on the floor!". Obviously, you are not emitting that much, but I would get rid of it.

The smell could be anything, but I would start with duct cleaning.

  • Not safe, nor worth it IMHO.

When did you purchase this house?  Have you lived there a few years, or only a few months?

If you just moved in, it can take up to a year or so, to smell like its your own home.  The dusty smell (which drives me BSC), might be alleviated with some good old fashioned plug ins & some candles (all the same "flavor").

How often do you wash your dogs?  Over time (and the older they get), they tend to build oil in their skin which seeps into their fur.  I wash our furbaby once a week now, and also his bed gets a good wash once a week.

  • What air purifier is it?

If it's an "electrostatic precipitator" style like Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze, or others where you clean the air's impurities off of a big metal grid then the ozone is only released as a byproduct of the cleaning process.  While you wouldn't want to have it outputting directly onto your face while sleeping it's fine in a decent sized room.  Ozone is unstable and breaks down fast so it doesn't really build up in a large space with the amount this type of purifier outputs.

Now, if you have an ozone generator that's an entirely different story.  These are boxes that clean the air by outputting huuuge amounts of ozone.  They're marketed to be able to even clean mold from inside of walls and do other super heavy duty things.  They're maybe ok if you're going to use them almost like you would a bug bomb - set it off and spend the night elsewhere, open the windows when you come back, but people have major respiratory problems from the quantity of ozone they put out.  They're illegal to sell in several states because the ozone output is in the toxic range.  An example is the "LivingAir" purifier.
