Reggie Monster has a double ear infection. I noticed yesterday that his ear had a little scab on the inside. When I looked in his ear to scope it out his ear was pink on the inside. I called the vet and they got me in this afternoon. I kept an eye on it last night and he was fine.
This morning his ear went from pink to a reddish color, but he still acted fine. I picked him up this afternoon to take him to the vet and his ear inside was RED and the other ear was pink. When I touched it he pulled away. My poor baby!
I get him into the vet this afternoon and they look at it and say "Okay...we need to get some solution in him before we put the drops in.." and they grab a muzzle. Um...what? The vet said,"Just trust me..." so she muzzles him and puts this solution in his ear. He yelped as much as he could with the muzzle on and his eyes had tears in them. I was a hot mess.
She shows me how to put the drops in his ears and sends us on our way.
After work I go to the grocery store and pick up another toy for his stocking. I'm on the phone with my best friend and was putting stuff away in the bathroom. I walk into the hallway to find that little shiithead head deep in the plastic sack that had his toy in it. I grab my camera and just watch him. He pulls the toy out and when he realizes it has packaging on it still he throws it at me like "Mom, fix, k thanks?" He was so damn cute and he deserves a new toy after his (and my) ordeal today!

Oh no...not looking forward to that! Do her ears get all red when they get infected? His ears are so red...I feel so bad for him. Not to mention...his ears smell HORRIBLE. The vet said that's normal and in a few days it will go away but uh..gross.
Awh poor puppy!!
Charles has ear problems all the time and we have to wash out his ears and put drops etc. But he doesn't like it and he has had to deal with it since he was a puppy, I can't imagine what he would do if it was his first one!
Love how they can just look at you and make you melt.
Bentley gets ear infections year round thanks to having floppy ears. He is just getting over his latest infection and they do smell when they are infected.
Hopefully, you won't have any trouble with Reggie and the cleaning solution and/or medication at home. Bentley just lays down and lets us do w/e we need to with no problems.
Another thing that helps with Bentley is to proactively keep the hair cleaned out of his ears. The groomer does this for us on a monthly basis and it has definitely helped. GL and I hope he feels better!
Reg doesn't have a whole lot of hair in his ears. But his ears seem to stay clean a lot...this kind of came out of nowhere. But this past year, he's had a lot of skin allergies. My vet said he may have an overactive thyroid so she took some blood from him today just to rule it out. She said if he does have a thyroid issue it's something that is very easy to keep in control.
I felt like a bad fur mama for not realizing he had an infection until yesterday. I didn't realize how common they were until I came on here, actually.
Maggie has chronic ear infections, too, and this is the worse part of the whole thing. She'll cower and try to hide and then will sheepishly come to me and let me but you can just tell she hates it. The vet attributes it to how much she swims, which is nearly year round since we don't get cold enough for her to not want to swim. Dexter ended up with his first ear infection this summer, but once again I think it was from swimming. He only swims in the summer - his fur is different from Maggie's and we think he actually gets too cold to swim during winter.
My lab gets ear infections CONSTANTLY. It sucks because I know when I go in what the problem is, but then I have to pay 60 bucks to find out that "yes, he DOES have an ear infection"
Thanks doc!
Can you ask the vet for a standing prescription since it is a known chronic problem? We don't have to take Bentley anymore for the ear infections, we just call the vet, they fill the prescription and we pick it up. If it doesn't clear up after the round of meds then we take him in if something more powerful is needed. Our vet's office offered that to us since it is chronic, maybe yours has something similar?
Usually it's a yeast infection, but apparently there are "different" strains and they need to be cultured.
In the past, with my other vet, I'd just call and they would just give me the prescription, no visit needed. My new guy doesn't want to "over prescribe" or something...
