San Diego ladies! - Advice Please

Hi! I'm Bliss, I'm usually over on MM, if you don't already know.

I'm relocating to the San Diego area in May after I finish school. It's been suggested I ask you how long you've been searching for employment. I'm hoping you can help me get a better grasp of what to expect.

1. How long have you been searching?
2. What types of positions are you searching for?
3. What's been your biggest hurdle?
4. Anything else...

TIA ladies.

  • Yes I hope you get some helpful info!  It comes up here fairly frequently because of how big the SD military population is.

I have 2 brothers in the military currently stationed in SD actually. :) The 3rd is in GA.

  • I graduated in June of 2010, but didn't start looking until October of 2010 because I was getting a certificate. I was looking in gov/npo, and I originally found a job in December with an NPO, but it was a temp job, with a very low wage. I ended up widening my search to clerical to beef up my resume, and I am now an office manager. I started out with a super awful wage, but recently got a wage that I could live off if H and I were not together. It's a rough market with a lot of BAs floating around. A BA means almost nothing here, unless it's in a specific field (like accounting or something).

My BA is in Political Science with an emphasis in National Security Studies, and I have a certificate in International Relations.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • San Diego is a really really tough job market. It isn't and never has been known to have a good one, even at the best of times... it really is a military town...

I moved in May and I just found a job...  the job is in the social services industry.  I have a masters degree.  In the summer I interviewed twice and didn't get either job - one job I interviewed for was a county job, there was one vacancy, and my friend who worked there told me they received over 150 applicants and they only accepted applications for a week.

When I lived in San Diego from 2005-2007, it was still a REALLY tough time finding a decent job - I had a BS at that time - and at that time, the county website still had at least 4 pages of open positions.  These days the county website only has about a page of vacancies... which to me, means it's getting worse.

From 2005-2007 I worked several different jobs, none of which I could have survived on without my husband's salary.  At one point I was making $8.50 as a receptionist at a real estate company.

Then I worked at an insurance company for $13.50 an hour.

I have read a little bit about your situation on other boards and if I were you I would not move to San Diego without finding a job first (I can't remember exactly but you aren't married right?)  Cost of living is high and generally speaking, wages are low, especially for a new college grad!

Biggest hurdle: LESS jobs, MORE qualified applicants searching for work.

Something that may work in your favor: you aren't a military spouse.  I know for a fact that being a military spouse has negatively affected my getting hired.
