Would you appreciate this if you were a teenager?

I'm kind of torn on what DH is planning on giving his cousin for Christmas.  He asked for an iPod touch for Christmas.  He wants to give him my old (2nd or 3rd generation, I can never keep up with them) iPod.  It works great still, and the only reason I bought a new one is because I thought I lost it, but we found it a month later.  The problem I see is that it has a cracked screen, but it's at the very top and where there's that half inch black border, so it's not actually over the touch screen.  We never bothered fixing it because I was fine with using it as is.  DH thinks his cousin will be thrilled regardless (they just got evicted from their rental for not paying their rent and are currently living with my MIL, so his parents will defienantly not be able to get him one).  I'm worried that he'll be a little bummed that we gave him a broken (but useable) Christmas present.  WDTIPT?

  • If it's broken... I would give that to him in ADDITION to another gift.  Like I would give him the broken iPod and then an iTunes gift card for a significant amount of money.  I think giving someone something that is 1) used, 2) broken (even if useable) and 3) something you bought for yourself (not him) is tacky if that's his sole gift. And just because his family is poor doesn't mean he should have a "beggars can't be choosers" mentality.  I say give him the iPod, note that it's an extra one and that you're aware of it's condition ... but make it a freebie (not his main gift).

  • What imoan said - don't make it the ONLY gift.

Also, is it possible to get the screen fixed/replaced?

  • I like the idea of giving him something else. I'll get a gift card that's the equivalent of what we budgeted for his brothers and the iPod will just be a bonus.

We can't get it fixed in time for Christmas, and it's $199 to do it through Apple. My dad mentioned my Uncle knows a way to remove the screen so we could replace it ourselves, but I'd have to find a way to get the spare part.

  • I think you can get a new screen off of Amazon. And since it's not his main gift, you could tell him about it at Christmas, but not give it to him until after it is fixed.
I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns

Try Amazon! I got a replacement screen for my phone for $10 and Mr. Bang replaced it. My phone is an HTC, but you may be able to find Apple parts.

  • Could you put a case on it that might cover the crack?
  • Ah! I wish I would have posted this a week earlier to get these ideas!  Amazon has repair kits for like $6!  I'll pick up a case and an iTunes gift card today and just give him an IOU for the new screen. A case would cover the crack, since it's so high it's not even on the screen. We live out of town, so I'd hate to make him wait too long for it, so I'll just give it to him for now and repair when we're in town again for DH's birthday.

ETA: Thanks for all of the great ideas!

  • Seriously?  A used Christmas present?  That's absurd

You know what's REALLY absurd? Making a new post in order to reply to a post that is 2 years old when the OP never came back in the first place. Now THAT'S absurd.

    Yes

Why the is that absurd? The kid would otherwise probably not get an iPod, and would probably be happy to have the used iPod in addition to a giftcard. I know if I had the choice between getting a new iPod, or a used iPod and a $100 giftcard, I'd definitely choose the latter.

    Your post sounds snotty.
