If you take time off around Christmas...

Thinking ahead here.  I've spent most of this holiday mentally planning next year, which is going to be awesome :)

I'm just wondering if it's better to have some time off before Christmas or to take the week between Christmas and New Years

Re: If you take time off around Christmas...

  • It's N/A this year, but normal years when I was working I always took the week in between Christmas and New Years. I always got more days off with less vacation days used that way because of the company holidays. And it was so nice to have that loooong stretch.

  • I always take the week between Christmas and New Year's off.  It just seems like a natural time with the holidays on either end.   And in my industry, a good portion of the judges are gone during that week so there is no court which makes it easier to just close up shop for a week.
  • I really liked having time off to prep for our vacation and the holiday this week. There was so much less stress knowing I didn't have to worry about doing everything and working 12 hour shifts too.

  • I always take that week off to unwind and relax.

  • I don't really have a choice, my office is closed the week between the holidays. We're always SUPER busy in the week leading up to Christmas due to people wanting to get in before the end of the insurance year so it wouldn't really be an option to take days of then.

  • Our office is always closed between Christmas and New Years, as was the company I worked at just before this, and I really love having that time off. Even if the office was closed, I would plan on taking it off.
  • I usually take the week between Christmas and New Year's off, but I think I might do it differently next year, if I can swing it.  It'd be nice to have a few days off before Christmas to make sure everything's done and have some fun time.  Plus, the week between Christmas and NY is dead at work, so it might be nice to get some quiet work time in to do things I don't usually get to--like cleaning my desk.  :)  The problem is that I seem to have a lot of deadlines right before Christmas every year.

  • I always save a couple days and take off before Christmas. Usually it's earlier in the month but this year it's right before (I took off the last two days, and today and tomorrow are my normal days off so I got 4 days off). Between baking, wrapping, assembling toys, etc, I have plenty to do leading up to the holidays. I work all next week and most of my dept took off but I have no interest or reason to have off the week after unless we are visiting my family in NY.

  • We are always closed the week between Christmas & New Year's because my boss goes home to visit family. I usually come in a few times during that week to do one last round of billing before the year end. I also go back through the year at that time and do stats and P/L audits to make sure everything is ready to send off for taxes.

As far as time off before Christmas, it just depends on when he leaves because we work up to that day. He's doing a short trip this year so he leaves tomorrow and we're back on the second. Luckily, he bought me the software I need to do all of my year end work from home since we are doing a shorter break.
