-_- Name Facepalm

So, I went to high school with this guy. He was a year behind me, we played D&D together a few times, but then I got married and moved away, the end. We weren't super close or anything, so I didn't bother trying to contact him again or anything like that.

Found me on Facebook a few days ago. Turns out he's married to his high school sweetheart and has a kid. Yeah, that doesn't surprise me much, and it's kind of par for the course for my little rural hometown anyway (he's 22. I don't know how long he's been married. The kid is one and a half). So I didn't really even bother raising my eyebrows at that.

His kid's name? Connor Lee Odin Lastname.

He and his wife have decided that the kid is going by Odin. And that all of their kids will have Norse names as a middle name, and they will go by that name.

Okay, I love Norse mythology as much as the next geek, especially since I'm married to a guy whose heritage is primarily of that area. I mean, DH has a really intense red Viking beard. Cool. So maybe I'd name my cat Odin, or Thor, or Freja. But my kid?

He said that his kid won't get made fun of because he's going to teach him how to defend himself.

This will go splendidly, I am sure of it.

Re: -_- Name Facepalm

  • Isn't that Geek's cat's name?

I like the name Odin for a kid ::hangs head in shame::

    Just kidding.

He's going to be Amadeus Maximus.

  • Odin does seem to be the most acceptable option of all the other Norse names I can think of.  Thor, Loki, Bacchus... I'd be more worried about their future kids.

My question: Why intentionally give your kids a middle name you intend to use as a first?  Seems odd to me.

  • CONFESSION TIME: I am in love with Norse names. I WILL have a Lena or an Einar or a Trygve or a Anders.

Back home, it wouldn't have been odd. Here, it might be.

I agree, Odin is my pick if you're naming your kid a Norse name. And with all the weird-ass names out there, maybe he'll just blend in. But...I dunno. I think it actually bugs me more that he's naming his kid because he's all "I LOVE THE NORSE GUYS!" It's not like he hails from the area. He doesn't. So...eh.

I mean, we were maybe going to name a boy Logan Xavier if we had kids, but nobody had to know that it was because of the X-Men, right? So I guess I'm just as guilty, except we picked legitimate names. Not like Rogue Mystique or something.

And I never got the middle name thing. Ever.

ETA: Huber, I think Lena is a great name. Some of those others...yeah, I think it's great to celebrate heritage and all. I really, really support that. But it's a "Think of the kids" thing. Meh. I guess I shouldn't be complaining much. At least these are legitimate names.

  • I like it.  Lots of people name their kids after classical Mediterranean gods, goddesses, and heroes. For that matter, I work with people named after Hindu gods, and went to school with someone named after the Christian god. Why not Norse?

Of course, I want to name our daughter, if we have one, after a dance move, so my opinion probably doesn't count.

  • I LOVE Loki!

  • My poor husband is named "Kiel" pronunced "Kyle."  It's hilarious how often people call him "Keel."  His mother wanted them to have a bit of their father's heritage, and read somewhere that guys like normal names and girls like unique names, so she just thought she just altered the spelling on his name.  His sister got the more Arabic name: Samyrah, which IMO is actually the better name of the two.

    Yes. Haha!

  • I don't get why they didn't just make Odin his first name if that's what he is going to be called. Nope, it's his THIRD name.
I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns

    AS A PERSON'S NAME?!

I seem to kind of be in the minority here. I don't know. I mean, it's better than Rason or whatever that one yesterday was. But I still feel like it's...not the best choice. Especially since it's his third name and he has two perfectly good names before it.

I think it really bugs me because it's the whole "I'm a geek, so I should name my kid a geek name" thing.

I don't have problems with mythology names, per se. I think some can be really nice. I just think that naming your kid Odin in a tiny rural Missouri town is not the best plan.

LMAO!  Yep, it is!   I can't believe you and Motzie remembered!

Though he usually goes by Dodo or Frodo (he has big, hairy feet).  And every once in a while KnockitthefuckoffOdin when he's picking on the girls.

To your friend's credit, my Odin knows how to defend himself, so maybe there's something to the name?  ::snigger::

  • Odin & Isis... right?!

I looove the name Loki for a person.  Don't worry, H would veto the hell out of any names like that.  So you guys wont be stuck with a nephew named Loki.

And Minerva.  Isis and Mini are sisters from the same litter.  Mini is pretty much your basic stand-offish cat (though well-behaved) so she doesn't get as many mentions as Isis the AW and Odin who's always trying to get into something he's not supposed to and getting in trouble.

Awww... I don't want Mini to think I don't love her too.  Give her a hug for me... even if she doesn't want it.

Will do, as soon as I find her!  She's been hiding for some reason, my guess is Odin picking on her.

Love and hugs to Penny Lane, too!

  • I get what you're saying, since the Norse mythos has become super popular in gaming in the last couple years (Wrath of the Lich King and Skyrim in particular come to mind).  But meh.

I actually think going with the offbeat name as the third name is a good move, since if the kid grows up and hates being called Odin he can just revert to his legit first name.

I definitely agree with that last bit, and he even mentioned that. So it's smarter than most. It still makes me shake my head a bit, though.

Maybe it's hard for me to think of a baby being called Odin. Was Odin the god ever even a baby? I can't remember how he came to be.

  • Just out of curiosity, what does TIP think of the names: Ransom, and Saxony?

  • I went to college with a guy named Thor.  He was hot and nobody made fun of him...

I actually don't think any of the names you listed are that bad.  I'd rather that then yet another ----aden
