Are holiday/Cmas cards becoming a thing of the past?

We have received a fraction of what we did last year and not a single one from anyone in my family...on either side.  We aren't sending them b/c we are doing birth announcements in a couple months but we always send SOMETHING during the holidays.

Re: Are holiday/Cmas cards becoming a thing of the past?

  • I have a fridge covered in them. But it did seem like a lot of people mailed them later this year and most of them are from friends rather than family.

Maybe since they haven't gotten one from you they aren't sending you one. We still sent them last year even though we were sending out birth announcements a month later.

  • We did not do them this year as I completely had too much going on.

  • I think they are becoming a thing of the past or people are just getting back on unnecessary expenses - and cards can get very expensive.  We only received around 10 or so this year and it's typically double or triple that.  Bummer, because I LOVE getting them.  :)
  • I think it's because people in general are cutting costs.

We've gotten a lot from friends with kids, one e-mail card and a couple hand delivered with yummy treat ones.  Not a lot from the older generation (aunts/uncles).

  • I think it's a generational thing.  We don't get very many which makes me sad.  I love getting mail.  We send out a picture and letter.  My mom gets more so I read hers each year, though.  My mom always read my grandma's too.

  • Not over here, it's like a pissing contest between my friends.  And I totally won this year :)  Or so I think.   Thanks jennied!!

I haven't noticed a decline in cards, I see the same people sending them out year after year.  But I would guess the recession would have a lot to do with seeing less since they do end up being expensive.

    thanks to jennied :)

  • I was wondering the same thing!  I was so excited to use my card tree this year and I have only gotten about 5 or 6 cards!  I don't send them, but right now it is just DH and I so I figure nobody cares what we have going on, or to have a picture of just us!!  Lol...once we have kids, it will be a different story!

  • We are cutting expenses, so haven't sent cards the last 2 years..... I feel bad, but by the time you pay for the card and postage it just gets out of hand.
  • I think a lot of people are cutting back. I did 25 cards last year & only did cards for like 10 people this year. I am also one of those people that keeps track & if I don't get a card from you for a few years then you are cut from my list. NEVER do what I did this year...3 different cards. Then you stress over what card to send to what person. I LOVE getting Christmas cards!
  • Ditto Jamie, I keep track also. Last year we did around 100, this year it was right at around 80. We have sent cards out since we started living together in 2002, it's always been some funny picture of us & athena or us on vacation. Maybe next year I will write a letter. I did write my parents letter for them if that counts. I LOve getting cards especially picture ones. Lyra and I look at everyone's pictures and point out all the kiddos everyday.

And I still crack up that Mandy&Cory's daughter a few years back kept saying she wanted to come to my house to play after seeing our card.  We must have looked super cool that year.

  • I still send them. I sent 60 this year, and plan to send more next year. I have a lot of people I send them to back home in PA though, and my DH's family is massive. I like getting them, so I figure that most other people like getting them too. However, I do remember thinking as I was writing them all out, that it did feel a little pointless sending them to people that are on FB, just cause they see all the pictures and know what's going on in our life already. My DH's aunt's are big into Christmas letters. One of them usually has a typo in every other sentence and writes like a 10 year old. The other writes waaaay to much and shares information that is completely unnecessary ( like how her 19 year old daughter's boyfriend works for the rail road and how management there is terrible, etc etc etc. Totally, ridiculous).

  • We haven't sent any this year. We may do some if we can get a good picture of the kids, but that's been difficult with Owen lately. I think with Facebook people feel more connected. The need for a letter is dwindling. I love getting pictures though. We've only gotten 4 or 5. Money is definitely a factor.

  • We haven't recieved as many this year either. Sad.

  • We have recieved a fraction this year.  I always do cards, and I just did not get around to them before or after our vacation, I bought them and stamps.. just never got them.  I am thinking of doing a "Happy New Year"  card, but may just scrap it all together?
  • We received very few until I mailed ours... then a bunch came in. Like they held out to see who they got cards from before they mailed theirs. I would say the amount we got was similar to last year.
