I'm going to scream (work vent)

I work for a family owned business (my bosses are H and W).  When I was hired there were two others who worked in the office, one woman with the same title as me and one assistant.  I get paid crap with ZERO vacation time (i.e. if I want off, I tell them and they don't pay me for that day).  My bosses go down to their house in FL for weeks on end and "run" their end of the business from there.  This means occasionally checking in, dropping the ball on things and running their business into the ground.

Since I started, they fired the other woman with my title and the assistant quit.  They have been gone for a month, leaving me alone for 8 hours a day.  Aside from the fact that I'm going nuts from lack of personal interaction, they will ignore my calls, emails, etc and then yell at me when they finally call and I'm on lunch break.  Yes bosses, I close the office to eat for one hour like you told me to do.

Today I told them that I'm leaving at 4 and will talk to them on Tuesday because they're closed Monday.  Apparently, they're not closed Monday (or Jan 2 as the former assistant told me they were).  I told them I was taking off then because I made plans to be out of town.  Their response, "I'll get back to you on that"--WTF?!  Seriously I want to give them a big EFF YOU!  I will be taking those days off because I've been tortured alone in the office for a month, you're asssholes to work for, pay me crap and damn it I'm taking off!  If you want the office to be open, hire another assistant--I'm not your secretary damn it!

Ok, vent over.  I can't wait until I take the Bar exam and can quit this freaking job.  Grrr!

ETA: I'm a big whiny baby for no good reason.  Big boss lady decided to close the office on the 26 and the 2nd!  I guess her H thinks I deserve a couple days off Smile

  • I am glad they decided to pull their heads out of their asses, and close the office for those two days.

I am sorry you work for crappy bosses, they obviously don't know how to run a business.

  • Ugh, thanks.  It's just frustrating working for them.  I took the job because it was the first offer I got after I left XH but it was a huge mistake.  They're older (65 and 67) and don't want to work but have too much pride to close the doors.  Their daughter is on the payroll but never comes into the office.  She has their same work ethic and demeanor.

Yesterday they got a holiday gift basket and I dismantled it to put the cheeses in the fridge after taking a pic and sending it to them.  They won't be back until after the New Year but did they tell me to help myself to the fruit or cheese or take it home to my family?  Nope!  Seriously?  What kind of jerky idiots do that?

  • Wow I am sorry Mint. But I am glad to see it got sort of resolved. You were assertive about it and look what happened?

What are they going to do once you quit?

  • Take the whole basket with you! And if they ask about it when they return, tell them it was moldy and you had to throw it away lol

  • You should have taken the cheese out, then taken the picture. Merry Christmas to you, with free cheese. ;)

Don't know and not my problem!  As business owners, they should know that they can't put the future of their company in a person who has only worked there since July.  I won't quit until March at least though.

And as for the cheese..it was well hidden so it was hard to tell how much was in there.  I'm taking 2 of the cheeses home Smile

  • Take everything perishable with you tonight. I am pretty sure they will no touch that basket because they don't care.

  • Man that sucks! My family owns the business I work at, my parents own it and go to Mexico for weeks at a time, and my sister is on the payroll but never comes in (ok she doesn't get a salary anymore, but her hourly is insanely high for what she does and she works about 5 hours a week). I'm the only one who works here like a normal employee lol. My therapist thinks I should go work somewhere else. We definitely don't depend on employees to get everything done though, and we have more than one :) Today we are supposed to be closed but I'm at the office for the SECOND TIME today putting out fires and answering "emergency" calls.

Oh wow, working for a family business is tough enough, I can't imagine if it were my OWN family!  Seriously, that just seems like unnecessary stress for you.
